They look well

out of interest how much would 12 month old limo suckler bulls eat to finish? Have had some offered but not done bull beef before. They are nice things just need putting onto ad lib. I’m thinking they will need 10-12 weeks. What protein would work best? I could give them straw to eat or haylage or both. Just got an empty shed and thought I would try something different.

If you can find something sensibly priced to feed them on they will be a good go

Ours will be polishing 10-14kg of blend a day when they get to that last 6 weeks.

TBF bull beef is pee easy. Where people go wrong is usually 1 of 2 things.
1- they start with the wrong sort of bulls. You want something that will grow frame and flesh fast.
2- they try to cut corners and save money on feed. You need to push them as hard as possible their whole lives with the cleanest best feed you can. Not give them 2kg of blend along with some rough silage.

the age you’re talking 12-14% CP would be plenty. 12 really. They just want lots of barley to put that finish on them

Using my own barley and beans in to a mill and mix ration it’s around £280 this time

@Anymulewilldo where do you send non assured cattle dead weight? Any reason to send them dead rather than through the ring?
Yes, I’m on TB shutdown so taking them live round here is a good way to be shafted without Vaseline 😔. Normally they’d all be going through Drayton. But give Nield’s their due, I’m getting a fair price that’s very comparable to what I’d have been on in the ring.
FA doesn’t make feck all difference to bulls. There’s plenty of competition from wholesalers and the ethnic market.
When we go TB clear again I’ll have to really weigh up going back to the ring with the bulls. Especially the ones that have taken too much after the dairy. The suckler bulls will be a different story.
