I was once told it was a sign of potash deficiency, caused by poor take up when it's cold for too long. Desperately needing sun/warmth to get going.

I've a 6 AC field on a bit of a bank. The top half lies drier and catches the sun (or what there is of it), the bottom part has lied wet all winter and is shaded by a wood.
Currently, the bottom of the field is purple while the top part has been grazed tight and coming back again.

I agree with neilo especially if the grass is already cropped short, grass is under stress
dont know why its purple though

I associate it with a cold wind, it's like a sort of wind burn

Purple is usually phosphate Deficiency either land short or lock up or poor rooting or ph too high/too low

more likely at minute cold wet land struggling to bring it up

Burst blood vessel in her lungs I would guess but cut her open and see. She won't mind now!

Not often sentimental about cows but these 2 are off to the cull ring in the morning, first heifers I bought 10 years ago to start my pedigree herd. Never missed a beat until this year when they didn't get in calf

Nothing died today, must be 7 weeks since that happened. Had a good clear up on Sunday mind.

The angle makes her look a lot smaller than she is. Will be at least 37kg.
