Anyone used Roussins on their ewe lambs before ?
@spark_28 , how you getting on with the ones that had them rather than your rogue visiting blackie ?
Too many of my beltex lambs have been very bare . Not sure really why as this was their 3rd season, and the last 2 years seemed ok .
Just keen to try something different rather than go beltex again .
Jnr management thinks we should tip them with a blackie , as they’re likely to be wee and survive .
It would also give @Anymulewilldo something to bid on at Longtown store sale !🥴😂
Who wouldn’t want a Romney cross blackie !🧐

Going too try some ewes with lambs at foot tomorrow 🫣😬 mules with twins bought them for £152 a head .. had them for 8 weeks on turnips not had anything other than a dip.. so £8 in keep £1 in dip, £3 each way too market… £166 they need too clear before profit.. easily achievable i think? I’d like £220-240 but am I just getting excited?

Have used them on mule hoggs and the lambs and wouldn’t want to lamb them outside . Did 1 year with them on romney x hoggs and still got the odd bare one . I didn’t mind them but the two tups died from pneumonia and didn’t get anymore . Easy lambing too.

Can’t be more bare than some of the beltex yokes I’ve had this year . Needing to change anyway, as the 3 beltex tups decided that 3 years here was enough , and they were culled before they could snuff it !

Bit of bandage, empty grease cartridge and roll of insulating tape and you'll soon sort that.
Sounds harsh but I leave them alone in a small field where they don't have to walk far for anything and they have all (well the 3 or 4) have recovered well.
I used to try splinting them and it never set properly or the bandages caused more problems than the break.
A ewe broke her leg before lambing running over rocks and was walking well in 2 weeks and went out of the small field wirh her lamb a week later you'd never know.

Put a Romney over them. I used to use my ewe lambs half brothers on tjem for years just pick out some then lleyn ram lambs and use tjem then finish them.
Tried Charmoise they were good I thought, if a bit bare, so went back to using my own mongrel shedder ram lambs again this time. So far so good. I always thought when a ewe lamb reared a really good ewe lamb or two it was a shame you couldn't keep a Charmoise cross one so can again now that was the main reason.

We got one last year for ewe lambs and they lambed fine although some a little bare. Thought we'd cracked it but this year had a lot of big lambs, some we've got out alive others we have not.
Thinking of not lambing them next year.

Probably the best working ewe here is a 4 crop Blackie Charmoise cross that the kids took a shine too . Looks like a brown faced mule , and spits out 2 lambs every year .
The Charmoise were brilliant , but far too bare for me here!

Pedant warning:

I reckon at £166 you're still £1 in the red :geek:

Pretty unlikely my hair-splitting will be relevant.
