While you're here @7610 super q (and other Ford-lovers) do you ever get any trouble with your in-line injection pumps? I had to dismantle mine again yesterday, same problem as I had at Christmas time with one of the plungers sticking, although a different one.. Thanks to @John 1594 I now know what to do, and I guess it's caused by me leaving the tractor outside unused for years, I changed the oil in the pump in December and it was milky again yesterday... how does water get in?

I thought ford pumps were pressure fed off the main oil pump, and lubricated with black engine oil?. Ones ive seen cetainly are

Ever considered throwing a bit of ATF fluid in with the bulk fuel tank, this modern low sulphur fuel doesnt have the lubricational properties of the older gas oil, it might be the fuel making it stick this time, not the oil

That's why I'm asking, cos I did wonder if it is something to do with modern fuel?

I thought the engine was running a bit crackly on Wednesday evening but yesterday I went to start it and the rack was stuck... The big filler plug on top had cream on it, just like the oill-filler plug on an engine with a blown head gasket?

condensation? Our DB runs on seperate oil, change it every 150 hours, by then its usually just thinned the oil with excess fuel, no water in there.

Id try mixing a bit of oil with the fuel, seems strange why the rack keeps sticking though

I got hold of an operator's manual a couple of weeks ago, didn't get one with the tractor. The pump seems to hold a half-litre or so of oil, and should be changed every 300 hours, which I didn't realise:

Every so often I'd put a drop of engine oil into the diesel tank and seems to do the world of good. Have done it ever since one day my old 46 wouldnt rev properly and felt like throttle was sticking, put oil in pump and about a gallon in the diesel tank and it cured it

They only started pressure feed i think when Super Q came out about 1985 on ten series

It beggars belief that any designer would think that lubricating a precision engineered component such as a fuel pump with oil contaminated by combustion deposits would be a good idea..............
Aye you've got a point
They weren't really any bother though

It's not unique to Ford, Cat use that system to and make some of the best engines out there the 3406 for example. They can clock some serious hours. At least with that system it gets fresh oil when serviced- some of them minimec pumps are never checked never mind changed.

And if you get a bad element it dilutes the engine oil ..................

I'd lubricate the pump elements with a paintbrush before putting back, especially the high up components that wont see oil for a while under normal use. A very small amount of gear oil wont run off two quick.
