Line rental & BB Speed

They assume which server you use which differs.

Search for the bt tester, have to enter some details but that gives your real speed.

Learnt all this of a bt engineer the other day, I was shocked!

Since last Autumn my speed has deteriorated from 1.7m odd down to 150k. I got the engineer out about 2 months ago to try and better it and he replaced some wiring and the socket and then demonstrated a speed of 3.8m. It lasted about a week before dropping back to the 150k mark.
Yesterday I thought it seemed quite responsive so I ran the bt wholesale test again and got 3.3m much to my surprise and it is still 3.5 right now.
However, and it is a big however, the crackling on the line which has developed since Sunday's heavy rain is rendering voice pretty well unusable. I suppose BT would say you can have one or the other!
Back to 160k today. Ho hum! Still got the crackling tho'.

Managed to get to over 1m by 2nd July. Gradually improved to a peak of 3.3 until 12th when it fell back to just under 2 and then we had a thunderstorm on the 19th which knocked it out completely for a week. It dragged itself up to 0.14 on Thursday and has now recovered to just sub 2 which is what I hope for.
I'm indulging in a load of u tubes while the going is good. Listening to a load of Morricone at the mo. Harmonica.

Well the crackling finally drove me to distraction so the engineer came out and renewed everything from the pole to the socket which is only a few weeks old. He also found that the router seemed to have been affected by the lightning so I put my old Netgear one back. He demonstrated a download speed of 4.2 and much to my surprise that is what I am now getting. I've been wanting it all new from the pole to the socket for ages, as the oldest bits are over 50 years old, but never managed to persuade the engineer.
Things are really cooking now!
