Moore unidrill into chopped stubble

Normally its fine. I have blocked my unidrill a few times before, usually pushing it to finish a field before the rain sets in properly. Typically the unidrill will keep going in poor conditions after I should have stopped and got out of the field.

Only exception has been drilling into a cover crop where the seed was going in ok, but the tacky soil was mixing with green stems and buolding up between the press wheels untill it blocked solid. It could have done with staggered press wheels, like later unidrills have. I changed drills to finish the field and the tine drill coped fine going through that cover.

Ok next question!

To try and get enough pressure on the discs to cut through straw into soil the drawbar starts to ride like this in the tractor... Is this a problem? Or normal?

Thanks

If struggling to get depth add more weight to the drill water in the wheels
Also drive slower this helps with straw blockage and depth control
If drilling rape the hopper is not full which reduces weight but be careful not to drill too deep where the soil type is a bit easier
The press wheels need to close the slot so I favour going slower
Roll after for slugs

It is now drying out here so deeper drilling is preferable because it could stay dry till October
I now cut high minimum a foot of stubble and bale straw because of slugs
Although with spring barley the ground will be shaved to get as many heads as possible in the combine

Thank you all - when I looked at machine closely one of the seed droppers was far away from the disc this meant trash was able to block up the disc and cause problems. I think I need to invest in a rubber doughnut as well to stop drawbar riding so high.

Thanks for all help - I think I am starting to crack this arable thing!!

Have you checked the bearing on the coulter that was blocking up with trash, as that would let the disc move over slightly causing a gap
I just have a piece of old tractor scraper about an inch thick on the hook to stop my drawbar riding up
Whats on your t shirt:oops:

We have a contractor who drills summer forage crops with a uni drill, he has always angled the disks to leave a rough finish (dd rape etc into glyphosate grass) which I'm not keen on but have let him do as it doesn't seem to hurt. He has been putting in some wheat this week into land that has been fallow this year (long story) and taking the same approach, should I be pulling him up on this? Must play hell with his kit?
