Footvax

Can I use footvax on just certain groups say just the stock rams or replacement ewe lambs or just my pedigree ewes

Or does it need to be an entire flock policy?

Entire flock policy I think. I stand to be corrected, but as I understand it, like with all vaccination plans they stand to be most effective when given the best circumstances in which to work. In this case, if you leave a number of the flock unvaccinated they can act as a disease reservoir and continually provide a challenge, reducing the efficacy of the vaccine. Much like if you vaccinate calves for pneumonia but continue to house them in a building with very poor ventilation, the likelihood of the vaccine being effective is lower than if they were housed in a better ventilated building. In my own experience I started to use footvax but found my biggest challenge was CODD not footrot and being quite expensive I stopped vaccinating. One major benefit I did see however, was incidence of early season scald in the lambs was much lower when vaccinating ewes compared to when unvaccinated.

If you do the whole flock in year one you can do only your replacements year on year then.
no , you do everything every year until under control , the manufacturers say do 2 doses to start , but dont quite get that , before , instructions were always 1 dose until a few years ago , whether they have made it weaker or want to sell more vax i dont know , but we still do 1 dose and it works just fine , the problem with it , is huge reaction site for a few weeks . I always do the selling rams/ ewes to give them a good chance meeting any new bugs when sold , not whole flock

I only used to do my December lambing ewes, as they were most at risk as they where coming in onto strawy muck for the a couple of months. That seemed to work well enough.

I could never see the point in doing everything else, which was under less challenge, just because they were on the same farm.

My neighbour has been doing the whole flock one a year for 20+ yrs. She's convinced that doing them mid pregnancy protects the lambs too. I'm not sure about that but but she hardly ever has a lame sheep.

One farmer told me that footvax boosts the sheep's immune system in general and that it helped them resist all sorts of disease.

Not sure if that's bulls**t or not? @bovine?
