Found this in a shed clear out last week. I made it some years and never used it. Mainly 1" bar and flat. Going to clean it up, paint black then ad in local paper. Ideal for those Christmas Logs.(y)

Will it melt @Landyman?

I replaced the grate of my woodburner with a piece of 10mm plate that had come from of an old back boiler, with holes drilled in it to let the ashes through into the ash pan. It must be some top grade steel, its not buckled at all, its as flat today as it was when I fitted it best part of 10 years ago, and a lot of wood has been through the stove in that time!

That’s something like I was thinking.

Is it just mild steel plate?

Few quid, Bobs your uncle.
If that reply is to me @Cab-over Pete, it's from second hand chequed plate, (or that's what we call it), with those lozenge shapes, they're on the underside, not sure how this compares to mild steel though.

Just thought, the bit of mild steel with the bars over it across the front will have helped keep it flat.

Inconel is just about the most heat resistant material you can use, used to make the turbine wheels on turbochargers and jet engines. Wrc teams use it to make exhaust manifolds which sees over 1000 degrees c.
A bit over kill maybe for your application but it is the best.

I made a grate some years ago, mild steel legs, sides, front and back, with solid round 20mm bright bar in the bottom, it’s had some tremendous heat in it burning logs and plenty of coal, the front, back and sides have bowed a little, but the bright round bar is as straight as the day it it was made.
