What's a "Backstop"?

Lots of it. We can't be like Paddy and vote again, hoping to get a different result.

Facts are Paddy is punching well above his weight. Hence UK hasn’t been able to steamroll Brexiteer border “fantasy” through the negotiations.

Meanwhile John Bull, is punching like a chiwawa. All yap, and no bite.

More Brexiteers fantasy

Why? If you wish to recall 17.4 million folk voted to leave, that is rather factual.
As part of the Good Friday agreement the government can`t implement a hard border.
If the EU wish to implement such its down to them & their members.
Remember we voted to leave and the Government promised to implement the will of its people.

The border issue is simple and only the EU / EC want it. But, ffs, if there is any doubt about what to do there the solution can be found in Edinburgh; the SNP want to leave the UK and return to the EU so they will have already sorted out what needs to be done on their border with England. Just ask, they're nice and helpful people so will be bound to share their wisdom... :)

@Ashtree 'Paddy' has been, is and will continue to follow orders from Brussels, and that is all. :(

Brexiteers drool and fantasise the thought of telling EU to PO, whilst UK defaults back to WTO.
Check out what WTO has to say about border controls .... (yes pet, I know it’s boring having to read all those technical bulletins and volumes about trade ..... but you can do it ...... you know you can ..... all in the name of making Britain a free and independent nation again.....)

@Ashtree I have no need to read those technical bulletins & volumes as we are lucky enough to have an oracle like you, who it seems chooses to reside elsewhere, yet delight in telling the majority they were wrong, eh pet?
Care to show us exactly where WTO says we must implement border controls?
First, a fact you can research I`ll pop it in italics to help:

There is no rule in the WTO requiring its member governments to secure their borders.

After Brexit, the UK could drop all border controls for traded goods and services and it would be perfectly within its WTO rights.

Of course those who voted to leave "don`t know nuffing" do we??

Slightly off topic but maybe not. I’m on holiday in Southern Cyprus. Greek southern Cyprus is in the EU. Northern Turkish Cyprus isn’t. We’ve been to the north twice this last week. It is very easy to do so.

Everywhere we go in the north we see signs saying that the EU has paid for various developments and restorations. Why?

Now we know where a lot of our EU payments go. In this case not even in the EU!

Remember all the talk about Turkey not joining the EU? rubbish!

Allowing it to do so would solve an awful lot of Greek Cypriot / Turkish Cypriot/ UN security expenses. Despite the fact that this is an island with an EU border which is very easy to cross from one side to the other. It’s just a question of attitude on both sides. That’s all it takes.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland, London’s the least favourite of the UK family of nations, may kick and squeal about having no border in the Irish Sea post Brexit.
When it comes to health care and availability of drugs through the NHS, there does seem to be a border already.
Laughable really ......

Meanwhile the funny little ROI - you remember, the place that's always there when it needs you - is still doing what its bosses in Brussels, Berlin and Paris tell it. But it's used to that now, remember when it pretended to have a say in its own affairs, the referenda, the whip rounds to bail it out etc.?
Laughable really...

No, no... it doesn't work for me, just being a troll-like sh*t-stirrer that is, I'll leave it to you. :)

You do miss the point, don’t you. Blinded no doubt by delusions of grandeur born of your dearly departed Empire. Germany would really like to get on with a deal of “some sort” to keep their cars on their way to you. A “some sort of deal”, would benefit them and the French no doubt.
But that blasted Leo, ain’t having any of it. And here’s the killer. His own party, his confidence and supply partners in government, the complete opposition are united behind him, in the “national interest”.
Now compare the Irish unity of purpose to the Fawlty Towers shenanigans in Westminster.

No contest ..... like the rugby scene really .....;)

Clearly world opinion is divided on this matter, you think lovely Leo is steering EU policy and everyone else thinks it's Germany, hmm... :ROFLMAO:

It's in the news everyday.
No proper definition anywhere.
Anyone know what it is?
What is the Brexit backstop?
Variously described as an insurance policy or safety net, the backstop is a device intended to ensure that there will not be a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, even if no formal deal can be reached on trade and security arrangements.

It would mean that if there were no workable agreement on such matters, Northern Ireland would stay in the customs union and much of the single market, guaranteeing a friction-free border with the Republic.

Both the UK and EU signed up to the basic idea in December 2017 as part of the initial Brexit deal, but there have been disagreements since on how it would work.
The Gaurdian News online gives this explosion.
