Tempting. Might need to find a sensible router/data service tho. Preferable without long contract. No point signing up to 18months if OR fix it in two weeks.

I got a 4G wireless router off O2. It costs about £15 /month for 30g data ( off top of head)
Use it as top up 4G when in dryer shed this summer, and as extra in house .... our landline broadband is about 0.5 -2.0 Mb and the 4G is miles faster

Know it’s dear/24 month contract but our home bb is soooo sloooow it’s worth it to me

Right.....

Still a problem. Done a bit more research - turns out a Three voice plan can be had with unlimited data for £32 a month. That would almost solve the broadband issue I think.

Would the Three sim run in a 4g router? Would this router act as a network SSID too that the printer could connect to via wifi?

This sort of technical stuff is beyond me!

Check with 3 but I think the answer will still be ‘no’ unfortunately. Read from here:

As I'm just in the process of going down this route and my 4G router works with one of Three's data sims which I bought to try it, the next thing was to find out if it would run on one of their mobile phone sims (with unlimited or 100Gb data). As I undertand it they would not allow this up until mid 2018 but then Ofcom stepped in under the net neutrality rules

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofco...mpetition-bulletins/all-closed-cases/cw_01218

the important bit being that Three has confirmed that it has already:

withdrawn restrictions on the use of handset SIMs in dongles and mifis.

It is my intention to buy a phone sim soon and try this (there may be offers after Christmas?). Currently £27 for unlimited data at Three (and was only £20 as a Black Friday deal).

How long the situation will last after Brexit is another matter as the net neutrality rules were I believe instigated by the EU

Don't forget if you ditch landline Broadband (for which they charge £30 fee (I believe) your line rental drops by £8 a month as I understand it.

By far the biggest difference to my speed was installing an external aerial this week which took my download speeds up to over 80Mb/s and upload over 20 M/bs in a very marginal reception area. Be careful to check if you are more likely to need a directional aerial (as I did with just one mast in range and clear line of sight albeit 12km away) or an omni directional one. Poynting aerials are generally thought to be some of the best.

Here's mine.

Nice antenna btw. Got the same one. Mines looking a bit more weathered these days (y)

Made a massive difference. I was getting less than 2Mb/s on landline and around 5 or 6Mb/s on the 4G router inside by an upstairs window (facing the mobile phone mast)

Yes indeed, there’s no competition compared to “rabbits ears” antenna, especially if you’re in a marginal signal area.

The other tricks are to check with Sitefinder where the nearest/line of sight local mast is for your mobile operator and “aim” the antenna at that.

Also keep the leads as short as possible. Most external antennas that are pre-cabled restrict the leads to 5 metres and for good reason, as you can otherwise tend to lose much of what your gained in good antenna and placement with overly long “thin” high loss coax.

Can anyone suggest a sensible Mifi device that's easy to set up, and reasonably priced?

Can I connect an ethernet router to one?

I bought one of these of Ebay for around £80 as everyone seems to recommend Huawei

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNLOCKED...I-ROUTER-VOIP-4-LAN-PORTS-2-RJ11/282969474457

They are brand new but ex telecoms companies so have various logos on the front

Originally I was going to buy one of theses secondhand and unlocked for £50

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/used-HUA...-LTE-Router-2-x-EXTERNAL-ANTENNA/292249400792

but for £30 difference for the newer model and brand new I chose the former.

They have ethernet ports i.e. mine is conected to my desktop by ethernet and to my tablet by wifi. However, you cannot use your landline router in conjuntction with it as far as i know; but i believe that there are expensive routers that can do this. I stand to be corrected on this though being a newbie myself to 4G internet.
