Buying cheap to tow, can bite you if it needs repairs down the line, so proceed with caution.
I bought my LC for £2600 solely as a workhorse towing truck ,It didnt bother me if it needed a few ££ spending every year ,,I knew I wouldnt be able to find anything else that had the power and reliability.
Its 19yrs old now and still going strong ,only got 109k miles on it

I think my old 80 series might be actually going ulp in value but too large for my Son's needs.

A lot of cars will manage that fine do you even need a 4x4

Yes but the clutch won’t, especially if you need to start off on a hill or reverse in the yard etc. Fine for occasional caravan towing ( and lets be honest when did you see any one with a caravan be able to reverse!!!!) but they won’t stand up to towing twin axle trailers etc and 1st gear ar always too high. My Golf will drag the trailer no worries but does not like the track up to the house or having to turn around somewhere tight!!

Joking aside they are quite good, the 5 cylinder engine sometimes leak at the injectors (blow out) and the flaps in the inlet manifold need watching at high mileage.
Just make sure its a tight one, full or nearly full MOT would be a must. And a few quid put aside for a bit of work, that will hopefully be never needed. Lots of independent Mercedes specialists around for assistance and economical fixing.

WJ Jeep 2.7CRD in Overland Spec...

Same motor as the ML270.. Everything parts wise cross references to MB numbers.

As said injectors can be bad. No 5 being being a pig to get at.
