Is anyone actively buying older tractors and spending a bit on them.ive two tractors which do probably 250/300 hours a year between them.a 6620 I paid £23k for 11 years ago.apart from servicing its had a set of tyres and still worth what I paid for it.currently on 4500 hours.other one, my 7710 I paid slightly less for 5 years ago.sitting on just under 7000 hours and apart from rockshaft bearings and a cab roof liner it’s had just servicing.local dealer told me it’s worth close to £40k now.its a joy to use both machines and as much as I’d like a new tractor these will do me fine.understand from friends people are looking to buy thousand and ten series Deere’s because they are reliable and not too expensive to repair.lots of 7000series get taken back to USA and get run to big hours as they are reliable and probably some of the best tractors Deere ever made.i know people have to buy new to get these older models but I really can’t see too many modern electronically controlled tractors with the emissions stuff being about in 15/20 years time but I may be wrong.can see tractors being rented by farmers then recycled by manufacturers in time too

It's all getting a bit mental, having to work harder and longer just to pay for more and more expensive machinery. I'd like to expand a little as a business but really struggling to see how without winning the lottery.

This is 188hp. It's only done 2300 hrs ( maybe ). It's £15k.
OK, it hasn't got any buttons to press ( unless you switch the lights on )
Someone's tried to update it ( badly ).
But it will last forever, and doesn't cost £100k.
Point being, shop around, there are low houred tractors out there. You don't have to spend £200k. There are other options.

You couldn't pay me any amount to drive that for a week. Sorry but nope.

Just read that tractors have risen in price buy 42 percent over eight years, this just shows what wrong with farming, everyone having to do with the same low prices year on year , maybe a part from the odd good year in ten, or good prices when most have nothing to sell in the case of sheep farmers, but if you look at things farmers need to keep farming, medicines, fuel, fertilizer, feeding and machinery it just keeps going up, l wonder we're its going to stop, surly this can't keep going on, so in 2008 a store lamb was 50£ ,it should be 80 odds to keep up, l think that should be the prices if all these subs are done away with or no one will be buying anything anymore.

I was not aware there was a firing squad preventing anyone from leaving the industry and doing something else?

I knew someone, sooner or later, would say that.:D
But the gist of the OP is tractors are too expensive. Any alternative suggestions put forward on this thread have been pooh-poohed.
So, I'll guess John Deere's future massive profit margins are safe then....

https://parristractors.com/used-farm-machinery/details.php?src=1&id=93043 This would do most jobs , front and cab suspension ,shuttle, buttons to press for gears ! alot nicer than the tw to drive although tw looks great ! for 22k you would be unlucky to have to spend much on it and depreciation practically nothing ,if we hadn't already got 2 8360s and a tm 155 I'd be tempted

Looks great.

But how are you going to find attracting the attentions of staff if your nearest competitor has a fleet of JDs all less than 5 years old?

Labour, if it is not already, will soon be way more important than machinery in agriculture.

All depends on the rest of the business, I know a chap over in England that runs a contracting outfit, busy most of the year but don't go mad for the latest and greatest, new fleet every year.
They've been in business for a long time and employ most of their blokes full time, guaranteed 40 hours a week etc. They get slightly older more settled staff, that would rather drive and maintain something older if it means they get paid every week (not a given with some contractors) and have regular work, than getting paid peanuts being self employed and having to charge round at 50k, only to be sent home on the first rainy day.
I don't remember them ever struggling for staff and they used to get lads that had worked first cut silage for Mr "Bells and whistles" turning up in June to see if they had any work because they'd been laid off.

Yes I’ve been eyeing that one up. And the 190 they have as well which is cheaper but really could do with a set of tyres

2008 April New 6480 T3 Perkins 145hp
40k D6 Front Suspension
Front Linkage
Eco PTO
600/480 michys
4 spools 2 electric 2 manual
extra worklights etc etc
Super Deluxe Seat.
faily decent spec id say. £45k straight sale no trade ins.

March 2019 7718S D6 175hp
Full Spec the lot basically inc Autoguide ready etc etc
LED worklights, hydraulic toplink even.
as above but 50k & Suspension all around.
£90.5k straight sale with 5 yr 3000hr warranty mind.

the 6480s 5yr warranty was on top as we paid it annually.
but was only about £1800 back then.

Yes i know the 7718 has more power & more lift but same chassis size.

But fag packet maths there is £43,700 to find its nearly another complete tractor

knock the spec back poss by 6 or 7k to get it nearer the 6480's possibly
but thats some amount of coin to find.
Back in the day what was your trade in or private sale tractor worth back in 2008 & then in 2018 ?

Honestly my from new 1996 6180 was sold privately for £12k & in 2008 & was in vgc but it was only late 30's new.
Same tractor today would be worth similar money id guess its value has basically stood still.
But new ones vastly increased.
Farm rent doubled since then along with every other input.
