Brexit reality, as it seems to me, at the moment...

Might even say it's England's problem to fix, Scotland and Northern Ireland were always happy with how things were and the pols show Wales has moved more to remain.

Apparently we are not allowed to believe the polls, and they are all rubbish. Last poll I looked at showed a very strong swing to remain, with that well ahead for any theoretical future referendum, but let's not concern ourselves with that either.

On the matter of Scotland, NI & Wales - no, we are the United Kingdom, and I will always vote to keep us united. It's all of us' problem.

The government makes thousands and the civil service makes millions of decisions every year. Do you really want to be consulted on each and every one of those? I don't. Aside from the time and money it would cost, some things are too complicated for the general public to understand.
no I don't but I do think a vote on the various treaties would have been a good thing after all other countries had them indeed Ireland have a few till they got it right perhaps that is the way we are heading LOL
No I will stand by what I said about this
if all the treaty changes had been voted through by the public don't you think it would have been more difficult for EU sceptics to push for a in/out ref let alone a vote to leave ?
if it had all been approved by the UK people we wouldn't be leaving IMHO
and if the treaty changes hadn't been approved do you think the vote would have been to leave if the EU had still been much the same as when we joined ? I don't not for a moment

the reason we are leaving [or trying to] is because a ref came far to late and was about the wrong question IMHO

these things are not covered by the way people vote in a general election as they are about lots of issues not just the EU

folk that were unhappy with the way the EU was going grabbed the first chance they had to say so as they had not been asked before
Thinking about this I would have rather had various ref's over the years about changes to the EU than I would an in/out ref

that's my opinion of it all anyway for what its worth,

I can understand parts of that, and agree it's not unreasonable. To be fair, we were going to have one around the European constitution, until France and I think The Netherlands rejected it so the idea was binned. Ireland cancelled theirs as well, as did Czech republic, Poland, Portugal and others.

@Henarar, just out of curiosity and when we are waiting for @renewablejohn to clarify the Finland thing, are there any specific treaties you would have voted against (and why)?

Lisbon
Nice
Amsterdam
Maastrict
Luxembourg/ Hague
Brussels (predates the UK joining, I appreciate)
Rome (likewise)

For convenience, here's a list of all the various referenda that have been held for the EU. Apart from joining and leaving, and the abortive 2005 constitution (that we were due to do), it's really only been Ireland that have had any of substance, and that's a function of their constitution. Whilst I agree that it may have been better if we had had more referenda here, it's not fair to claim that lots of others have.

to be honest some were before I would have been old enough I think and the others I don't know I didn't take enough notice of to really form a opinion simply partly because I didn't have a vote and partly because years ago I didn't take to much heed to this sort of thing years ago

Fair enough. and take note of my late edit to the above though, and don't feel as hard done by as you have been - very few referenda across the whole EU patch so we've not been picked on here.

I thought I had read that other countries people were asked
I don't know that I feel hard done by I just think it would have been a better way rather than our gov carrying on as though everyone was behind them which they clearly were not hence the ref result
I have seen lots of EU supporters bemoaning the fact we are leaving when half the people of the kingdom don't want to but on the other hand its clear that while we were in the EU half the people were not happy with it, I think this should have been addressed sooner and in a different way

Hardly any - if you strip out the joining/ leaving votes you get Denmark and Ireland in 86/87, Italy (on behalf of the whole EU, testing the water), Ireland, Denmark & France on Maastrict,; Ireland and Denmark on Amsterdam (see a pattern here?); Ireland on Nice; Denmark & Sweden on the Euro; Ireland on Lisbon, then again on a constitutional change in 2012, Ireland and Denmark on Petent Court, Greece (but not Ireland - wow!) on the Greek bailout, Denmark on opting into some Justice and home affairs legal stuff (they declined to do so). Take out the quirk that is Denmark and Ireland and you have three over the duration.
