I found the details of the leasing and it is £1.80 a cow/month for 5 years, that is for basic heat detection/activity. It was up to £2.40 for their full package. They were saying they are looking at adding mastitis detection and calving in the future.

Though £4/cow/year on estrotect patches and an eye over them in the parlour will still leave you with similar results for a lot less complication. I still haven't convinced myself that going down the route of electronic aids will leave me any better off

How many bulls do you run on how many cows? And how much does it cost to feed them each day? In winter the bulls here need to be serving a cow a day to make it cheaper than a straw of semen. Say 50% conception they need to getting 15 cows a month incalf each which they don’t

A bull can often get a cow incalf when she wont hold to AI
Herd I used to milk we ran a simmy bull all the time with the cows then used to hold back the bullers every morning and AI man served to fert+ BB. We used to get about 50:50 sim:BB calves born so make of that what you will.

The bulls help sniff the bullers out and then the AI backs the bulls up when you have 3 or 4 cows bulling as the chances are the bull isn’t going to serve all of them in turn!

My ideal would be a few blue bulls with gastric bands.:)

Or I carry on with the black and whites and sell heifer calves and gift the bulls away.

What about just drawing the billing cows to the bull? No different to drawing them to AI yourself, without the hand in bit. Dad did that for years and covered 120 cows with one lim bull. When I was bulling heifers could segregate them from stores as no space, so just used to pen the bull next to them. Bullers soon appeared. Always thought a well built bull pen at the exit to the parlour would be better than any heat collars and cheaper too.

Generally run 2 bulls with the milkers,220 or so.

A fag packet calc,I lose the place for two cows,so they cost the profit of 2 cows,I normally get 2 years out of a bull and lose about £500 when I sell them (some make near the purchase price at culling, depends on the fat price at the time).

How do you work your bulls? Which breeds dairy or beef?

Run them in with the cows, black and white, tried Angus a few years back they got overfat and went lame.

Used to have a bull pen on the exit from the parlour it worked fine,no room for one now, thinking of on the side of the collecting yard but cows wouldn’t be able to stand outside it.

do you have a problem finding enough fields to graze the herd, ie dairy bulls on a footpath? It would worry me, with all the dogwalkers around where I live
