Regular large numbers of good stock, its easy to get too and its got good facilities , parking etc. Plus its location in the country is ideal. Only downside is herefords success is putting pressure on the more rural markets which is a shame because they are part of the landscape and once there gone theres no coming back.
I wish they would start on time ! It's annoying when the start time is well past and the Auctioneers are chatting away down the alleys with their mates and no intention of getting going though I will say it's better now than 12 mths ago and once Matthew gets going he soon rattles them through on the cattle . The sheep side just seems to be a lottery as to when they start selling !

Every market i go to is the same , they won't start till the buyers are in and farmers dont help turning up late with stock. Years ago markets started earlier in the morning and people got on.

Bid up and you will get the sheep wherever the market

To a point but how many can pen the numbers herefords getting? Buyers want to turn up with confidence there is enough stock to fill artics and they are not going to get stuck on rural back roads getting to and from it. I always thought a markets success depended more on how long the payment terms were for the main men!

I agree but many markets have come to grief despite having big through put by offering too much credit

Hereford - Wednesday - Lambs:

A superb entry of spring lambs sold to a much more buoyant trade than anyone ever anticipated, with the 39kg-45kg averaging 211p/kg and an overall SQQ of 208.5p/kg, soaring to 308p/kg for a pen of 37kg lambs that flew to £114/head. Other pens at 280p/kg, 267p/kg and 233p/kg. The 38kg plus lambs were the easiest sold with any amount 220p-230p/kg, in fact the top 20 prices were all in excess of 221p/kg. The heavier weights, now that the hoggs have gone, were also better with those 45kg plus lambs selling between £95 and £105/head. In fact the top 20 prices were all over £98/head. The light lambs got dearer as the day went on ending up over that 200p/kg. All in all a pleasing morning.

Cull Ewes:

A larger entry of ewes, following the short entry last week, and meeting a good trade throughout. Lean strong ewes still very much the easiest sold with fat still hard to place. Best continental ewes a real trade to £125, with several trading £100 to £119. Strongest Suffolk x ewes to £102.50, however the main of the Suffolk x Mules £80 to £88, very few £90 plus. Lean continental ewes £70 to £80 throughout. Mules if lean and strong £68 to £75, thicker sorts £60 to £67. A larger entry of Welsh and Speckles, the best of these £60 to £68, plenty of Welsh £55 to £60. Very small hill type ewes £40 to £50, very small and plain £20 to £40. Rams look good value, topping at £99, other Texel rams to £90 and £94, although plenty of rams £70 to £80, plainer sorts £50 to £70. Goats to £115.50, other strong nannies £80 to £107, very plain sorts £25 to £50. A very competitive trade throughout with some of the ewes dearer at the end of the sale than the start.

Average £67.70/head Continental£125.00Suffolk£103.50North Country Mule£75.00Welsh Mules£74.50Speckle£67.00Welsh£66.50Cull Rams£99.00Cull Wethers£75.00

Carmarthen store cattle trade was a bit hit and miss today.

Some lovely well fleshed bb were £1150 and a run of south Devon heifers were £950, but on the whole I’d say trade was back £50-£100 a head.
