All things Dairy

So crappy week last week, lost one cow and heifer calf with Hydrops. Had a nice frisian x jersey calf off my jersey cow, but then lost both of them, i think to milk fever with the cow possibly falling on the calf, as the were found side by side in the field the morning after, but with no visible signs of distress on either.
I was hoping this year to get some decent silage, and get it at the begining of june, its done nothing but chuck it down since the begining of the month, had 5 inches last week, and had another inch over night, and the forcast not looking any better !
Oh I just love farming :(

Anyway to cheer me up no 8 gave me a nice heifer calf, drumarush endurance x brown swiss ( born on saturday but didnt post as i didnt didn to jinx her) so feeling better this week (y)

Lovely scenery

  • The highs and lows of farming! Sometimes the lows all come together unfortunately. Onwards and upwards

I think its important to share the lows as well as the highs. Sometimes i think ive had a bad week, i pop in here and read something and realise maybe my week wasnt so bad after all, and maybe read that posters post a few weeks later and that low, has turned to a high, which has taught me what goes down , given time will come back up.
I do wish this sunshine would come back sooner rather than later !

I'm so sorry about your cows @Happy hillbily, why do these things always happen at once. We had the dead stock man three times in a week last month, the only consolation I had was that all three mishaps were unrelated and unpreventable (in calf heifer broke her leg on pasture, cow had an inside out calf, and a baby calf trapped her leg in a gate). Your brown Swiss cow is lovely by the way.

That rain is crazy. You must be on decent land.

Only 100mm for June so far, but I guess the constancy of it is the problem rather than total volume. Four dry days in the last 24.:(

Do you call land @1200ft decent :scratchhead:
My grandfather used to say that we farmed in the clouds. I think my saving grace is its steep, mountain goat steep, so what water does fall drains away quite quickly.
Had a lovely drying day today, but still cold, im quite surprised how well the grass is growing considering the conditions.

Johnes is a right pig ,hiding away till stress comes a calling !! One of my favorites with 3 daughters and a granddaughter has just come back high for the first time (she was going dry , I think I read that as they dry up theres more chance of a milk test coming back high ?!!)
I hope your cow improves . We are lucky having round bales left and this year we have carried on bufferfeeding that, in a TMR , with blend and molasses, so the cold wet day or 2 , hasnt knocked them too bad !
Vet bloods back today, completely clear of Johnes and Fluke. She's back out with all the others, has picked up a bit although lost lots of condition, is eating and cudding, no milk and still not eating all her cake, so really not sure what to make of her. As we will now have plenty of grass and as long as she doesn't get worse we'll probably keep her, dry off, hopefully get the Simm calf she's expecting in the autumn and then send her up the road. Obviously if she loses her calf then she's gone.

Does this pass as standing hay? Never had the weather to make any nice belly fill for the dry cows, will they be ok grazing this? Hasn't got much structure but it's old grass that's not had any stock for a while and no fertiliser, just don't want to end up with a load of fat dry cows

Use a strip wire, make them deck it and they wont get too fat.
