ROI politics - will Varadkar win the election?

Having had a chat with some family I'll be interested to read the opinions of others in the ROI.

My lot reckon he'll probably scrape through, but wouldn't bet much on that; is this a fair appraisal of the political situation over there or are they letting the fact that they loath him influence their opinions?

(An add-on; is Coveney still aiming to oust Varadkar for the Fine Gael leadership, if so would he be sad at an election loss?)

Why would we care here?
A different country that is now further removed from importance to us than ever.
What a bl**dy stupid question.

From a national perspective... Ireland is our closest neighbour, indeed the only foreign country with which we have a land border, we do a fair amount of trade with it, we have some common security interests and we have a lot of each other's folk in our respective countries. On a personal level, I have family and friends there and take a general interest in foreign affairs.

And, anyway, I was asking those in the ROI. (y)

I was just prompting a response, and you kindly obliged. :ROFLMAO:

Ok you are limiting the thread to opinions of those in ROI, fair enough.

Sorry to bother you with a post from someone from the UK. (y)

latest poll is putting SF in the lead, given what a hard time the UK had with a British friendly leader in RoI in getting a WA. lets see us get a good Trade deal with a British hating leader in RoI who can block any deal

I think it maybe a good time for sf to go ahead in the polls, it might get people off their backsides to vote for the other partys.

The main problem is the others are so lackluster. Fine Gael have really plummeted due to the arrogance of Leo and their incompetence with the health service, housing and homelessness. Can't vote for sf, they talk out of both sides of their mouths, voted to raise the pension age in the north and campained to bring it down here. I know for sure in rural ireland if coveney replaced leo that would definitely increase their vote.

Leo gets a lot of hate, largely unfairly imo.

There are many over here who'd welcome a hard-Brexit, resulting from whatever. I don't think that, if there was a deal the EU was keen on, there would be much chance of it failing to get through, one way or another.

I don't know about hate, but many I've chatted with heartily dislike him; a few really like him, but I guess they make up less than a quarter.

Id say that Miachel Martin and Fianna Fail have the wind at their backs and will probably be the main partner in the next Goverment . Leo had his shot and was all mouth and no action. Coveney was the partys choice but leo got the nod from the TD s. Mary lou and co are shameless opportunists who cannot be trusted. Any party who refuses to cut its links with its IRA patrons has no place in a democratic society .

He never enjoyed strong support in rural areas. Irish country people tend to be more conservative, the housing problems haven’t endeared him or FG to the urban populations either.

Interestingly enough I did hear a lot of criticism being thrown at him for a planned and subsequently cancelled RIC commemoration.
