Harvest/Yields 2020

Spring barley started. Moisture down to 11.7% so stopped to cut some in the morning. Yields look pretty decent. 7-7.5t/ha so far after 30ha although expect the overall average to below 7. 67 kg/hl roughly.

Finished the Gleam, and all things considered I’m pleasantly surprised . If you’d seen it going in , It was touch and go if we should’ve been on it, with me combi drilling very slowly behind the plough. As I said , some headlands not good, but in the field itself it was really slowing the combine down . I’m pretty sure it was doing 3.5 ton in the field with an average of about 3 overall . Not many stalks , but big heads . Looks like Gleam is a serious contender in the continuous slot

looks great. Seems like the weather has suited Scotland this year . We can only dream of barley yields like that .

Our winter barley will do that, but not with a back end like this.

I suppose we only grow it on very light gravelly part of the farm, and usually a second cereal . Takes some doing to keep a 4 ton crop of barley off the floor.

Finished wheat harvest here today - not dried a grain.

Final field was actually quite impressive for straw given the year, especially as it was the last field planted at end of Nov.

Just spring barley and beans to go in a couple of weeks.

Here on heavy land it's success or fail is very much down to winter. Good establishment and not too wet = win. Otherwise = big loose.

We seem to fall down with ear blight. Looks OK till flowering then sh!t shrivelled grain etc.

Straw yield 78% of 2019 8.6 bales per Ha of Krone 8 string bales, well 8 strings was the aim but not all had 8 strings held together. Good job I hadn't recommended my contractor elsewhere. A broken knotter was the reason given the last field was a much better job after fixing the knotter.

Trying to look after their margin - contractors will try and make savings anywhere possible....even if it means reduced string!

On that topic I'd hate to be a baling contractor this year - some fields I've seen on my travels would only be a bale to the acre. I can't see how any contractor could cover costs at that.

Massey Harris or Claeys,along with a David Brown/Albion tractor drawn one,5 foot cut,bagger model with a shute for the hessian bags. Big step up from the Binder last year.

Down here we're only getting at most 3 dry days in a row meaning everyone wants them the same day. Round balers are two a penny but HD square........
