All things Dairy

We rock around on about 6 inches of dirt over shale here.

Agreed, showing 21mm now. We had 26mm only 9 days ago, but big day time temps and lack of fert of late have hit GR
Snap, been very hot here, surprised how quickly its dried out, not really lack of rainfall but more so how quick the moisture in the ground has disappeared!

Will you spread some fert on Saturday in prep? I'm undecided, grass needs fert but also needs rain, pointless chucking fert out without the other!

I’m surprised your on a wet farm and your still asking for rain.

It's the top half I'm needing rain for and all my silage ground and dad's etc, the stuff by the river will be OK for another couple of weeks.

Worst come worst I'll have to feed silage until I get some rain. My qutumns are due to dry off in a couple of weeks so that will ease pressure on the grazing ground as well

Can’t believe some of you grazing boys are/considering feeding silage this time of year when you should be utilising cheap grass. Tut tut, shame on you. Think of the cost & work 🤣

With the cost of diesel and what looks like beautiful weather is it worth turning that silage?
Stunning weather here for the week!

Good question and one I contemplated, decided if it was going in a clamp I wouldn't bother but because I'm baling it if I'm baling less water it's probably worthwhile?
Tedding doesn't cost me a lot as I stick her in economy pto and half revs, about £12/hour in fuel at those engine revs and can do 10-15 acres an hour depending on ground and quantity of grass
