1st Experience with Electric Car

Close but the wrong way round. The typical electric heat pump they quote with a 4 to 1 heat ratio so that every 1kw of electric used produces the same heat as 4kw of oil. Totally meaningless figures as your comparing apples and pears.
I remember now it was that way around but at the time electricity was 4 times as dear per kw

Supposed to get the train to the Highland Show on Friday morning from Durham. Train was running and unaffected from the Strike-return on Sunday was- then a truck crashed on the line past Newcastle so all trains cancelled on Friday morning. Contacted friends who were traveling with us they volunteered to drive 👍 .They had difficulty getting through Durham due to some poor sole threatening to jump off the viaduct.
So he turns up eventually in his newish BMW x1 drive 4 or something very nice car . Range about 190 miles and that’s driving hard . Got to Edinburgh hotel on the Royal Mile with car park and as luck would have it charging point in the car park. He’s got an app which tells him how many miles/battery % it’s got . Hotel didn’t charge for parking and charging the car . Returned today. Dropped us off and he still 35 miles left to get him back home . Possibly one of the best all round cars I’ve been in . Very smooth comfortable (very)quick full of tec . Talking about it with him has changed my view on electric cars . I rarely do long journeys so be fine that way .

It would have been a BMW iX xdrive40…. With a starting price in excess of £60,000 rising to well over £120,000 for the iX50 and more again for the M60

At some point the government are going to some kind of taxing system to electric cars to claw back the money lost on petrol/diesel, its coming.

Of course they will.

But, they're pretty much killing off red diesel by the back door at the moment- doesn't mean that you've stopped using red diesel though does it?

You wouldn't refuse to buy a house, in case the capital gains tax was too high when you looked to sell?

Try to touch mine and you'd get a swift kick where it really hurts for starters .
Why'd you say that about the car ? Have you been in one ?driven one ? know someone with on ?

We have been looking at them and my opinion is if you have a source of free charging whether that be through work chargers or renewables then it makes sense.
Personal opinion but I would lease at the minute as technology is moving quickly.
Some cars are a 66 week wait.
Big fan of the new platforms designed for the Kia ev6/Hyundai ioniq 5 instead of batteries fitted to old car platforms.

How long does it take to recharge in a service station , given I would need to charge twice to get there and back , 600miles
at best its likely, you would charge twice at a push in a 300 plus mile range EV you would get where your going but as most EV's like 80:20 charging by that you charge when your at 20% charge left, then fast charge to about 80% this can be in about 20 minutes but can be longer in slower charging EV'S
so my guess would be set off from home at 80-90% then charge once on the way up, then once on the way back.

if you had a margin left so 320mile range car and only doing 270 and a long stop where you can charge in the middle you could do it with just that middle charge.
then charge when you get home.

the whole filling leccy cars up with the zappy stuff is stupid.

when was the last time anyone plugged there cordless drill in to charge it up?

Yep you just banged a fresh battery pack in and away you go….

I’ve said this many times before, all it needs is somewhere to go to change the battery, For arguements sake we shall call it a filling station.

Pull car into a slot, plastic card into machine and choose the level of charge you want, underground conveyor thunderbird 2 style moves along clamps onto battery that’s under the car and removes it and then replaces it with a fresh one.

You engage drive and away, No need to even get out and should take no more than a minute or 2.

Just needs a bit of joined up thinking so all the batteries are the same. Can’t be that hard can it. After all we all been running about for the last 100-120 years or so either in petrol or diesel cars. So it’s been done before!

Have you found 2 makes of cordless drill that take the same battery yet?

Read the other day that Fonterra are about to run an electric milk tanker this coming season. Don't know much about it, its just a development vehicle and only has a short range, so only good for locals but its supposed to have a swapper battery that they claim can be changed in a few minutes.
Probably not much good but with electric and possibly hydrogen here, change is coming whether we like it or not.

The purchase price of EVs is crazy then worth bugger all to change when battery is knackered, also not every vehicle is compatible with every charging point which is crazy, no thanks I'll stick with my diesel Nissan qashqi regularly getting 55+ mpg
