I put some arable ground down to a herbal ley as part of environment scheme, , 1st yr was average due mainly to poor dry time at sowing (Autumn) but 2nd yr mown for silage and got nearly 10 bales an acre , one field Fym mucked last Autumn other field will be mucked this Autumn, no artificial fert so far but worried that it may run out of steam next year or the following yr
My limited experience is that it is vital to rest the leys properly. I have one block which had FYM last back end. I took a good cut end of June and left it until next week, when some lambs will eat it off before winter. That's it.

Where I have had 2 bites this year, the ley is looking frazzled... lack of water has notr helped ;)
