There was a thread in the old place where someone had a harvest student sent out powerharrowing who came back and the trough was too hot to touch. Turns out he'd been dragging it around without the PTO engaged.
Have also seen fields power harrowed in 540 instaed of 1000 and mower conditioners ran in 540 instead of 1000 as that what the old one was….

Would u rather have the steering axles than the artic?

the artics were mainly for broad acre tillage work, with trailed equipment. Generally no linkage or PTO

the 4 wheel steer ones had linkage & PTO & were intended for row crop work. This one has outboard planetaries but a lot had bar axles to easily adjust wheel spacings. The 4 wheel steer has 3 modes - front steer, 4 wheel steer or crab steer.
The idea of front only steer is it gave more accurate & precise steering when planting with a linkage planter & marker arms ( God - remember them 🤦‍♂️ ) or when inter row cultivating.
Having PTO made them popular on big chaser bins & they don’t get the wiggle up that artics do
They were popular in the US for silage work, as they used to put front dozer blades or FEL on then, as well as towing silage carts
Apparently, on some of the really sloping country & hilsides they have in North America, they were more stable than artics on slopes

admittedly, a relatively small niche market, more expensive to build than artics & the advent of the high horsepower ( 300 hp or more ) FWA tractors probably killed them off.
However, Case still make a front steer row crop version of the STX, but they aren’t cheap . . .

yes, planter & chaser bin is about the only high horsepower tractor work I do on my farm

that’s why having linkage & PTO is important

tbh, I’ve been looking for an 8000 series JD for the last year or so, but any 8400 / 8420 that I’ve seen have had about a trillion hours on them & still more $$ than this, & any later 8000’s have just been out of my budget

if only I’d bought a new 8420 instead of the NHT8040 heap of sh!t I did back in 2009, it’d be a different story 👍
