Just out of interest, what do you consider to be the good rods.
Well I can't most suppliers say gone there suppliers Chinese, what ever they sell are not like I used to get, last lot of Oerlikon were terrible rubbish, dirty lots of smoke and poor slag removal, there basic general purpose rods were Fincord M Maroon tip supper easy start and to run very little splatter and slag fell off, there rod called just Fincord Yellow tip were very heavily coated, easy start, no splatter, and what I would call low temperature as the very thick coating held the heat in so the rod melted quicker so little penetration causing less distortion, ideal for shafts and turning back in a lathe got a superb finish, unlike some could see every run showing up as hard and soft lines what you definitely don't want. and last in the mild steel was Supper cord these were an all position rod, harder to re-start but with a bit more of splatter so on clean metal it needed protecting, ideal when welding heavy machines as could make a good job without having to turn them over, there welding rods for cast iron were very good and there stainless steel all very easy to use, Started to use Easab as near to the Oerlikon and a few years ago used SifTrode were excellent and tried to get some more a few weeks ago and told not to good now, I have enough rods to last me out, if I do weld anything for other people say supply your own rods,

These used to be very good but expensive VERY put your hand in your pocket and use Eutectic, they will supply a welding rod for I think any thing thats weldable if you can't weld with those give up. unless they are buying and selling other manufactured things.

I have a Chinese one to see if I could weld/like it. It can do 2.5 but cuts out way too easily on 3.2s going to get a parweld one this winter. Have only heard good reviews from them

Anyone else got one of these?
Had one for 6 months or so now and I couldn't say a bad word about it.

We're onto our second one, first one did a lot of work but got dropped into slurry, it didn't like that so just bought same again, think this one will be 18 months old or so.

Think the small inverters are mostly cheap generic Chinese boxes.
Have a rohr 220 stick welder had it for a while now. Works well gets dragged out for on site Gate and feeder repairs sub £100 so not the end of the world if it lands in the s***e. Don't have 4mm rods but burns 3.2 fine on a 13A plug. The only downside is that the plug is moulded on and don't think the 13A power supply is up to 220A.
Starting a new rod not much of a problem think it has some anti stick properties built in.
I had a parweld that was about £300 lasted 18 months . Got a Rorh for £100 for exact same reasons as you and it’s been brilliant

I have a little 130 GYS inverter. Bought it with the intention of using it on long extensions for repairs, but it welds so nice I wish I had bought a bigger one for in the workshop. I have several other welders in the workshop, and thought any bigger than 130 would be redundant on a long extension. It can just about handle a 4mm for filling holes when cranked up to the top, but the extension lead will pop off it's thermal overload if you burn more than a few rods in quick succession. Lovely little welder on smaller rods though controls a bit fiddly with welding gloves on. Light as a feather, hoof it up a ladder or anywhere really ;)

Strangely I used my inverter yesterday on a rush job for somebody. Simba press had worn right through the towing eye so they needed a new eye put on in a hurry.

They dragged it to a remote store that had electricity so used the inverter rather than the genset.

One thing I forgot to add originally is that try find out if the welder comes with a good carry/ storage case. My Thermal-arc came with a very good case which the leads ect all happily fit into. To me, this alone is worth a lot just to keep everything safe and damage free. Whatever I buy I tend to go for things that have good quality cases that won’t fall apart in the back of a pick up.

Bought the 200 a couple of years ago. Loves the 4mm rods. No complaints.
MVF stock them.

Hello

I'm looking to replace my Sealy air cooled welder. It's just for occasional use at home

Looked on Amazon and e bay there's no end of different makes around 140 - 160 amps some below £50. The more I look the more confused I get

It's an arc welder I'm after
Thanks
Have a look at R-Tec,brilliant company.
