It's great the prices are dropping so much.

Between fert prices dropping and fuel, things aren't looking as disastrous as predicted this winter.

Doesn't look like powers going out, going to be a gas shortage, or fertiliser.

Or accept that is the yield potential of that particular area of soil and do nothing different. No additional cash spent on any input.
This is the thing for me, obviously look to see what the issue is and repair if possible, we are slowly shrinking our heavy clay y notty patches with muck and gypsum etc but some bits If I had variable rate, I am probably better of reducing all inputs, the issue is though I haven't got the technology to do it and often in a really bad year (in certain conditions) they can outperform the good bits.

I would normally put up a picture of Justus Liebig's Law of the Minimum, but can't be bothered today. There are lots of schools of thought on variable rate treatment. Make the combine driver's life easier with a more even crop or chase the potential of the better bits and just provide the basics in the poorer bits.
