Cows.

Sounds like a similar set up to ours except your on a lot larger scale! Who says it all has to be one system? We used to calve 120 cows but have dropped that back to 80 and now buy in 30-40 suck calfs (230-300kg) in September/October and buy some stronger store hefiers to finish in the shed over the summer to make use of shed space it seems better for us as cash flow is better and spreads the pressure on grassland. We graze the store hefiers graze the better land along with the sheep and the cows go to the rougher land and can clean up surplus grass in places that we can’t cut. It seems to work for us but it’s just another option

Be curious to see what the panel comes up with.

Need to come up with a cattle system that fits this -

Large block of extensive but half decent sea level grazing, decent shed, handling systems (2), 4 year TB testing area. To be run alongside sheep (about 1000 of the things). About 150 acres of silage ground.

Indulge me and tell me what you would do ?
Where would you sell and what do they want?

That’s a very good question? I’m not familiar with local markets, we usually finish everything and send dead weight or if selling store send north to Rugby. Got half an idea a bit of box beef would be good ? Maybe not as a main thing, just a side hussle.
Round here, there's Colchester market every Tuesday, bit further for Norwich which I think is once a fortnight on a Saturday, there's also Thrapston and Ashford both further still (I've never been to either).
Colchester have a store sale every so often if that's what you want to do, if selling primestock then native breeds get hammered there, best to have a job for them somewhere else.

@CopperBeech If you want to do some beef boxes you want something not niche but that's got a bit of a story or some such draw towards it. Most people can't tell the difference between a lump of razorback holstein bullock and waygu beef but they like to think they can so you need to sell a story. Some belted Galloways maybe? They're distinct and people could pick your beef out by the picture on the label.

Agreed

@CopperBeech might be worth speaking to folks on here who keep Sussex cattle and then if you are selling live take a trip to Ashford

Forget Colchester

If you're going Conti cross and selling live then go look at Norwich

I've always heard a Northern owt but never a Somerset art until one TFFer (and I've lived in Somerset and Dorset)
A Somerset "art" translates to a Devon "ort".
And again I'd agree with Henarar as 1 option.
Or buying native stirks in the autumn, which will winter relatively cheap, and either sell store following autumn, or finish the 2nd summer at grass.
Native because of how CopperBeech describes the grass.

Land is in north Essex:

Some great help and advice so far chaps, thank you very much.

I like the idea of having some trading stick wirh a quick ish turn around and maybe a few native sucklers to give me an interest.
I wouldn't arse about with cows if I were you, unless you're going to fatten them
