Next one that aborts get foetus and as much placenta as you can sent off for testing. Only way to know if you have a problem. Can only be done through a vet. Isolate anything that aborts immediately. Hygiene v important. Sorry if this stuff you already know
Thanks boydvalley yes the aborted ewes are in a isolation unit. Thanks for your advice

Done toxo and enzovax for around 5 years now and it has cut abortion massively, missed toxo last time as unavailable, not sure whether to just go enzo going forward.

I’d stop enzo vacc before Toxo personally, with a closed flock. If you are buying in replacements then enzo is a very sensible option though, almost essential imo.
Neighbour just changed from breeding own replacements to buying them in, and has been plagued by Toxo, Enzo and Campy for the last 2 years. :(

How much does campy spread from sheep to sheep? Or is it more from birds/ in the environment. Big ram breeding company are quite open about having a problem with it- they can’t be worried about it coming in with their rams🤔

Toxo is from wild cat sh!t as I understand, I use deccox blocks pre feeding which is supposed to reduce toxo and stops ewes from shedding coccidiosis eggs. Good news is they only get it once if what I was told is correct as they build immunity, usually get odd gimmer abort put this down to prob toxo (usually premature and dark/black afterbirth), but at rates I get it not worth vaccinations, and as above she won’t do it again!

Well ,it's a proper lamb killing day today here. Wind rain ,sleet, hail, everything except sun. It's howling through the shed aswell. Lamb warmer box at the ready ☹️
It's even grim down here in sunny south Wales. Was thinking of going back to April lambing but might shelve that and stick to late Jan to early March! Sheep look more miserable than me.

I knew I'd spoken too soon on my post yesterday. What a bloody night. Horizontal rain, then sleet and now hail, the hills are as white as they've been all winter. We had a couple of poor dooers in in front of the stove till this morning, first time for a long time. My rounds this morning picked up one goner and thankfully none born, not too bad considering really.

...now it's back to sleet.

I'm not far north of you,top field looks over the royal Welsh. Bit blowy up there today

Snow on the hills this morning, we had alot of rain & wind last night. Another few dead one again this morning. A very midling lambing with weather and one thing and another. Hopefully the weather will finally take up at the weekend but been saying that for a month.

I wouldn’t be worried about rams spreading it either, but iirc the birth fluids from aborting sheep will spread it, hence the advice to isolate from other in-lamb ewes.

As with Toxo, they will get a natural immunity to it, ideally if they come into contact with it at a ‘safe’ time. Most people that vaccinate against campy will only be doing the young sheep (it’s an annual vacc), then rely on natural immunity after that.

You know it’s a sh!t lambing when you see the knackerman coming up the drive when you haven’t called them.🤐

Fortunately I was able to send him on his way, as they had sent him to pick up the long weekend’s heap that was collected yesterday.
Today’s dead lambs will go in the box. :(

Had a freezing cold night with driving rain, checked round this am and two dead, not newborns but early lambs so 3 weeks old, huddled in mud behind a wall.
Pulled a bloody big lamb this morning, windy but dry until now, just had snow shower then driving rain
Had an injection in my carpal tunnel this morning, Dr said take it easy 😂😂😂

Not a dry square inch to lamb on here... I hear a lot say but your down south. Yes I know but being on rubbish clay the lambs are born into mud. Less favoured areas might be bit colder but have drier places to lamb.
I don’t think area makes much difference in shitty weather!
We are on clay in the Pennines and like you not a dry inch , coupled with strong cold wind and hail/ sleet and rain
I am actually glad we have a yet to be dealt with rushy field as it’s the only shelter the ewes on that piece have
