How would highlander llyen crosses kill out? Think it could be the next move for me from llyen xs but not sure how Wethers would do. Only small flock so no chance to do A flock, B flock approach

Much the same as Lleyn crosses imo. Highlanders aren’t any more of a terminal sire than a Lleyn is, so I wouldn’t expect them to add much to terminal traits.

As far as maternal traits are concerned though, the Romney influence in the Highlander will make a huge difference to the Lleyn’s ‘lamb in one spot, one will do’ mentality, in my (thankfully) limited experience of Lleyns.

That was never a trait I found with llyens, lambed inside and it was more that they all want every lamb! But I have been a bit disappointed with numbers of lambs, however that's maybe more to do with me not being a very good farmer!

Or is there quite a bit of texel influence in you lleyns?
In which case putting a maternal ram of most sorts (Highlander, pure lleyn, or other) will perhaps reduce it's carcass traits. (But improve maternal ones?)

They started off as a mix of mules, Suffolks, texel x, and a few hampshire x. So not exactly a homogeneous group! Maybe need a few more generations of maternal breeding to even them out

You’re not alone in that. I know of several flocks that have moved away from Lleyns in recent years, purely because prolificacy had been dropping year on year.
One flock of 1200 threw in the towel after they scanned at 130% (all rams had been bought from one of the top recorded breeders, with premium prices paid). That one’s now running NZ Romneys, although says the cross is better than either purebred, so far.

The days of Lleyns having litters is over it seems, but maybe selection pressure has gone too far?🤔

How do your highlanders do in regards to litter size?

Whenever I worked it out they had a good twinning rate, but actual numbers will always vary according to farm/management.
Treated well, and not being knocked for six by haemonchus, we have seen scanning %age of just over 200%. More normally though, 180-185% here in mature ewes.
I’m happy enough with that (outdoor lambing and no concs fed), but could be increased if the management was better post weaning/pre tupping imo. I should, but don’t, pull out lean ewes for preferential treatment etc, and everything just gets run as a single mob post weaning. Always a busy t8me here though, so such management never happens, although I can see it would pay dividends. Cereal harvest, tup sales, etc, all get in the way though, and only a one man band…
