Sprayer options and must-have features

Agreed, but we are starting from scratch with kit and likely need to buy a loadall for livestock work, grain loading and to free up the main tractor for spraying. Can't get everything at once. Initially I'm looking at using it for timely Glyphosate applications but still having contractor do pre-ems etc, so can't yet justify much more than £15k. Very much on the threshold of purchase or not as we are only 2 full time for livestock and arable
For me,
And it’s not an overly popular opinion, is to go for an older mechanical drive self propelled.
something like an agri buggy.

Simple spray pack
Relatively easy to fix..

I bought a willmot Lightspray 5 years ago, for 3k, similar spray area to you..
yes, I’ve had to replace bits, but I work it out to cost about £2 per acre.

New engine, £10k
We are bad enough at maintaining our current tractors, so not keen on a self propelled. Would be nice though. Should probably just improve maintenance and mechanics skills

Not necessarily. If the sprayer is running a pto pump etc then maybe slave off that to run air.

currently run 9 sections on single line next rig will have twin nozzles with the ability to swap between them or both on the go. I’m looking forward to that.
Assume you will go live boom, that’s a good time saver.
This. Also check out chafer trailed; many of those had their own compressor

As others have said push the budget as far as you can. If you have gps on your tractor then auto section control is not out of the question and has real agronomic and economic benefits. It will mean buying a newer and more expensive sprayer but I guarantee that it will be more cost effective than buying a cheap one now and another in a few years’ time.

Second feature that I didn’t think I could live without is a ‘pump out’ option. We have a couple of ibcs to hand which makes life a lot easier when we need to chop and change chemical.

Live boom is where even when sections are turned off there is liquid going past the nozzles (just not out) as opposed to old school sections where you have a bunch of pipes coming from a point on the sprayer where the section control valves are.
The up side of live boom is you get instant chemical at the nozzle when you start spraying a new Chem mix, not having to wait for initial Chem to flow from one point on the sprayer. It’s good if you do a lot of different Chem mixes and have to clean out often.
Called boom recirculation everywhere else

A bit weird people suggesting “must have” gizmos on a tight budget. The one piece of electronic bollox went wrong on my simple sprayer on Saturday. I completed the job manually. Did the spray go on accurately, answer yes, will the chem work? Answer yes. Basically the “must haves” aren’t necessary on a budget. The physical attributes of the sprayer, boom, tank, and paintwork are far more important at this price point.
