Case 885 steering wheel spinning

Hi, i have a case ih 885 2wd, one of the last 885s, intratrac say it's actually 895 in disguise,

But lately the steering wheel spins but the front wheels don't respond for ages, it's better at full revs but still not great, rear linkage seems to be working OK, no obvious leaks, so thinking danfoss or steering ram internals maybe, or is there a valve not working somewhere, has anyone had similar symptoms, if so what fixed it please?

Is the steering wheel heavy to turn or still quite light? If you pull and hold a spool valve does steering come alive ?

i had something similar on a jd6620. To check wether it was the steering ram or the danfoss, i placed a plastic disk in one of the hydraulic connections to the ram. The steering wheel could not be moved anymore in any direction so i concluded that the ram was leaking from one side to the other. new seals and job done.

Tried that as I saw it on another thread and no difference

Turn steering full lock then remove hose from opposite end of ram continue to try and turn it full lock, if you get oil coming out of ram as you try and turn full lock then seals are bypassing. I assume you have changed hyd filters first??

Was it a big job to replace the seals? Did you need to remove the ram from the tractor to do it?

yes, had to remove the ram. wasn't difficult after we realised how to undo the ram end
