Nocturnal visitors 🤬

Try it , the choice is yours
My approach to anyone trying to gain unauthorised access to the farm
Or lamping is chase them down
I admit been very lucky ,partly because they almost always run away to start with And when we have cornered them they run away
I have had altercations with various visitors and certainly I am not the sort looking for any fight but I am certain that if we didn't stand our ground we would have more visits
In fairness the police have come out fairly quickly when called and feel for those where the police back up isn't there
Problem is these people really don't care what they take or from who or where
We just move the problem down the line to other farmers who may be an easier visit
And that still isn't right

Nearly a year since my caravan was stolen from the back of the yard. One of 5 in a separate storage area (thankfully they took mine in hindsight), padlocked gate etc. came one frosty night, took all locks off with cordless drill / angle grinder and drove across 6 rig and furrow fields to nearest road. Rang police, first question was ‘is it insured’ - as soon as I said yes they lost interest immediately. They gave me a police incident number to give to the insurers and that was the last I heard from them. And we wonder why insurance premiums are so high! I said at the time it’s more than likely to be in one of the local traveller camps, would they come with me to have a look for it? They just laughed and told me to be careful if I go…. I thought better of going on my own once I’d calmed down. Plus I didn’t want the caravan back anyway after seeing how much of it was left behind on the fields getting it out.
The joke is, If I said I wasn’t paying any income tax as I’m not getting value for my money from public services and civil protection I’d probably be typing this from a prison cell.

Members of the pik@y or shall I say travelling community stole my Lurcher bitch 10 years ago, I never lost the faith , knew Id find her eventually and cash talks. Fast forward 1 year and 4 days after she had been stolen, we had info on where the dog was, cost 250 quid for a traveller to give info on another traveller !!!
Was lucky we knew a chap high up in Avon and Somerset constabulary, so arranged to visit the camp with officers attending and the RSPCA to identify my dog.
All went well , obviously the caravan dwellers didnt know where the dog came from, RSPCA identified her chip and we took her home.
How the hell I didn't kick the living daylights out of the scum I'll never know!

Local farmer had a visit from the travelling community and it got a bit mouthy, threats of physical violence the usual.
He’s not the sort of fella it’s sensible to threaten and one of the lads got the thrashing of a life time while the others presumably scarpered. He had a big fire not long after and another smaller one after it was rebuilt.

I hope it felt good when he thrashed the lad because he certainly paid a big price. But you can’t give in to these
scum. I told the coppers supposedly ‘investigating’ my thefts that they were taking a big risk not dealing with these people. I said they were risking much bigger crimes being committed if I ever caught any of these scum in the act.

What was their reply?
A nervous laugh followed by the statement that they were taking a risk upsetting farmers like that.
Apparently it’s part of their culture to threaten and steal and we should put some notices up asking them not to.
But it’s all bit pointless because all these security measure only work for so long anyway, so I was told.
Not long after I had a series of these thefts and the visit of the waste of space copper I got a speeding ticket which made me so angry I got heartburn.
I certainly understand how Mr Martin was. You just understand how it is if your own, no one to help. Just a red mist.

Sorry, jumping in here as I know how you feel. This comment about having a bigger crime on their hands would see me have my gun licenses taken off me; yet again an easy target on us who have things to lose.

Feel free. Good thing I don’t have have guns.
I nearly destroyed one of the shooting lads jeeps. They had gone out lamping and I had mistaken their vehicle parked up for a pikey mobile when I went out in the middle of the night checking. I used to go out several times every night trying to catch the c*nts. Started the loader tractor and drove straight at the jeep to roll it over and then do battle with the scum. Just what I was planning to do I’m not sure, but I think I would have tried to run over them if I could. Luckily, the lads were still in the yard and I recognised one of them before I drove into his vehicle.
When you have several thefts without police support it does things to you. We cancelled our holiday that year.

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from. It’s like a Wild West round here at night. Frequently after deer poachers and thieves. I’ve been face to face with them out of our vehicles with metal bars in their hands. Had guns pointed at us. Don’t think in a decade there’s been a prosecution.

Sorry to sound defeatist but unfortunately the people you're up against have nothing to lose, a few months in prison is a holiday for them. You can never win a battle with some one who has nothing to lose and will almost certainly hold a grudge if beaten.

Sometimes for the sake of your own health and your family, it's best to keep a distance.

That’s exactly what the police told me.
I found that very hard to stomach to be honest.
Fortunately there was a change in policing policy in our area and we started actually having some police cover at night. Of course it doesn’t stop thieving but it does mean that there is a slight chance they might be caught and inconvenienced.

Isn’t it a bit of a pain to get the quad in and out though?
It's possible , though I know of one farm that has buried a container above ground with a disguised door , you would never know it was there as it blends into a bank but easily accessed .
Half the problem is the bigger the padlock , alarms and gates the bigger potential rewards for visitors in their eyes
If they cannot see any locks or stores it may make them go else where

2 vehicles around last night with 8 to 10 occupants shooting pheasants in trees off roadside, gamekeeper got pretty close(lot braver than me) but they slowly moved on and were not deterred,2 police cars arrived but they had moved on by time of arrival

I'm not defending the tarmaccing mobile community because they can't be trusted at all,but they are an easy get out for the police to not bother investigating. When we got robbed it was the first thing the young Copper said when he got here " there's a camp in xxxxxx and another in xxxxxx ,we won't see any of the stuff again,I'll email you a crime number ". We went investigating by ourselves and it turns out it was a farmer all along and he was a one man crime wave. Don't hear of pikeys taking bottles of Clik and elastrator pliers very often 🤔

With my game dealers charging 50p per pheasant, the poachers are more in need of sympathy than prosecution! :ROFLMAO:

Nor are they likely to be behind some of the big stuff getting stolen, tractors, tele handlers and the like are beyond fitting in the back of a tranny van
