Just listened to Fronteir front runner weekly report. Bloody hell so depressing! makes You wonder what’s the point of farming at all in this country. Might as well moth ball the farm for 3 years in SFI. keep the machinery under cover and take the money for the good of the public.
Stuck 30% of arable and all grass in sfi
Thinking it is a bit modest now , wheat isn't worth growing , not that much of mine is ...

High prices cure high prices right but how can the domestic homes of just stopped, have they all filled the stores or taken cover? Cows need feeding, layers have been restocking and pigs have improved. Yes all will have cut back but not stopped.
You answered your own question. Particularly re feed mill, if cereals are too expensive they substitute with Palm Kernal, Maize Gluten, used to be rice cake, but haven't heard of that for a while, etc etc

Would the alternatives have been that much cheaper, elese they would be using them full stop? Now in the short term with prices where they are do they not offer good value?

I’m not sure that applies so much anymore. Prices for all products are based on cereal/soya values, and can only be substituted in ruminant rations which are only a small percentage of compounder tonnage nowadays, dwarfed by pig and poultry which are always cereal/soya based. PK used to be almost given away at the docks in summer, now it just tracks the market like all straights. Plus cereals are limited in ruminant rations regardless of how cheap they are because farmers inevitably end up killing one or two with acidosis otherwise

In my long, but very limited, experience of delivering into feed mills, I have seen them swing from probably 80% cereals (they don't like that as it's hard to pellet) to 20% cereals (again hard to pellet) trouble is, it takes a while to get a ship from the other side of the world here, but they will do it to shave a couple of quid a tonne, because they have to, as their customers demand the cheapest feed they can get. All back to your demand destruction.
