Yes, they are very good for all major muscle groups. You can do aerobic sessions and strength short interval training, They are hard word but if you start slowly you Will make good progress. It’s easy to do 30 mins on runner or bike, but at the gym you will rarely see someone on the rowing machine for very long because they find it too hard. Technique is everything find a you tube for it.
there is only one machine worth buying, the concept 2, nor cheap but they hold their value very well, anything else will be worthless second hand.

Best form of exercise bar none in my view. I could run miles and miles but I'd never sweat. I certainly sweat rowing though. I do 5K at a time and find that a good go.

Go gentle to begin with. It's a near total body work out and your core muscles won't be used to the kind of strain involved.

Best put somewhere in the house where it is naturally very cool.

Rowing is far kinder to the joints as there isn't as much shock loading. I consider cycling far too dangerous on the roads and there are no real good running routes around here.

Interestingly, rowers are known to have the highest lactate debt achievable in athletes, I presume this is due to the sheer number of muscles involved, just goes to show how far you can push your physiology and it'll cope.

I've got one. It's just seriously boring. A run outside with your mates is more sustainable

I couldn't disagree more.

If you need stimulation while on a rowing machine, put a TV or radio in front of it.

As has been said before, rowing, whether on machine or water, is the best exercise you can do.

Especially for all us shepherds whose knees can take doing much else.

Jebus JD. I'm sorry to hear that. If you can build up to the level where you are rowing 6 times a week it would probably help with your diabetes but I'd be seeing your doctor first as rowing is a heck of a strain on the body.

Rowing is ace because it's done and dusted in less than 30 minutes- you'll have a huge advantage being tall as well. There is nothing to stop you watching TV or youtube or listening to music whilst you go, either.

I'd sooner row than run for 30 mins or an hour. The weather is normally abysmal, you can't run in the dark any sense -especially on the roads- and I'd sooner not be giving my hips and knees the grief. I also never find sitting on a bike for hours particularly comfortable.

I do forestry work stock work spraying etc so not too bad shape in some ways just need to tone up a bit more ..years ago pressing in shearing sheds was about 105 kg with a 85 cm belt now 115 kg with a 98 cm belt so want to burn off pies and beers hahaha
sugar levels down to 7.4 on finger test so kinda got that better
just got to get bit of pride back in myself so thinking this might be a good way to do things

yeah runnings no good for your body especially if you work with stock anyway, just shakes and wear your joints makes for even more aches and pains as you get older :cautious:.

get a concept 2,its so easy to just pop into the spare room and do a workout...music on full blast!!
currently i row 2500 m every day ..takes about 11minutes for me. its very easy to do, hardly start sweating in 11 minutes but my pulse will be over 150 if i push it hard. i aiming to go to 3000m maybe 3500.m.thats enough in one stint
Its too short a time to get boring, but as has been stated it is boring for long stints 20 mins plus
If i feel the need for extra i do two sessions ,morning and evening
the concept 2s are great in that they dont have a resistance setting as such, but the harder you pull, the more meters you move(unlike my cross trainer that has a resistance setting)
They are expensive, but i expect mine will outlive me.

Concept 2 does have a resistance setting, it’s on the side of the fan, in effect it alters the gearing. If you go into the menu you can set the resistance factor 125-130 is a good start which would correspond to about 3/4(out of ten) on the fan. Don’t be tempted to have it higher as means you will have to pull way too hard and be knackered after 20 strokes. 2500m is a good star, the ‘official ‘ distances for testing and the concept records are 2000 and 5000. 5k is a good workout about 20 Mins is a good target if you haven’t done much before.
