It still looks like basically 10% trees and 10% eco-focus areas plus a lot of record keeping.

Yes, plenty of paperwork, but I dare say a lot of it will be a headache to do once, then an annual ‘review’ needed.

Cardiff seem steadfast in their tree target, with only a few exemptions for tenant farmers mentioned so far. The 10% ‘habitat’ requirement will be made up of existing habitat areas or, if they don’t exist, things like grant aided herbal leys, etc, as far as I can see. On a mixed farm, I can make that part work tbh, as long as the payment rates are adequate.

Most of the rest of the UA’s, I don’t see as a particular issue, other than meaning different paper exercises to get my head round. Again, payment rates will have to be high enough to make it worthwhile doing so.

How much do you get paid if you do the 10% trees and 10% eco? Do you get a payment for the whole farm?

They are just two of ten ‘universal actions’ that everyone will have to do to qualify for any support.

For trees, it appears that they are suggesting a payment for planting/managing new trees, and/or a payment for managing existing trees.
Habitat will attract payments for managing existing habitat, but also encompass payments for establishing and managing rotational habitat options (as they have in SFI over the border).

I don't have a problem with habitat, but trees are a massive headache.

Surely ‘rent a forest‘ will become a thing?

If things carry on as they are there’s privately owned woodland next to us, I might just rent a bit to tick the boxes.

Also wouldn’t matter where the woodland is in Wales.
Rent a forest !!!! - Welll!! with milk you had quotas - surely some land agents/solicitors must be rubbing their hands anticipating the fees they can charge for
arranging some "Forest/woodland quota" deals. The Forestry commission are probably sitting on a fortune.

I did suggest just that to my LL, as they have pockets of woodland dotted all over most of their farms. He said it might well be possible, but I suspect they will want a good bit of the support that we receive for having it.

A better option might be what I discussed with a neighbour, that we just declare some of that woodland on our RPW forms and don't mention it to the LL. Would anyone ever check, RPW have never asked to see my tenancy agreement. We could show any inspector a bit of woodland if they turned up... 🤫

Both my 'expressions of interest' have been accepted. One for the farm and one for the common of which I am the secretary for the graziers association. Be in touch in the next 6 weeks with the details. Decision to accept by 29/2.

If farmers in Wales rented tree cover then not one tree would need to be planted. Plenty to go around.
