Agricultural colleges are churning out hundreds of youngsters every year. There’s no shortage of youngsters keen to have a go. That’s why every starter farm has a list of applicants a yard long. What is missing is the profit margin to support the young ones so if (when) they make a mistake they can weather it, survive and get going again. Although I do think the courses aren’t teaching the right bloody things!!

Personally I think they will slowly drop, even though weaned calves off marginal ground at £1000 doesn't seem to bad,as with all farming I think there maybe an increase in the larger herds on estates and large farms that are looking at the greening credentials but they won't produce the top dollar calves that you (and I) like looking at
They’ve got no one to do it, the people in charge are incapable or to lazy and the chances of finding labour capable now is small.

I think if they want it bad enough they'll make it work.
They do. But Christ they’re under pressure. It doesn’t help that for all we claim that farming makes no money, every time a farm or block of ground comes up we’re all selling our own mothers in order to get it. Put it to the rest and average the rent out. Someone trying to get a foot hold is on a fair back step to start with. Especially seeing as land agents only care about 1 thing £££
