I went to Truro market for the first time since last November, the 2 month and older calves/striks were making good money £350 for BB heifers (8-10 weeks old). Young calves (1-2 weeks old) and anything that looked like a bit of work was making no money at all

Hereford Today:

2427 Store Hoggs
The smallest show of hoggs to date as numbers tighten throughout the country, an army of Purchasers present with demand for 4000 plus hoggs. Trade the dearest we have seen and quite possibly ever in all honesty.
Strength short on the ground however topped at £142 for a penful of Mule Ram Hoggs, others to £139, £137.50, £137 and £135, 18 Texel x hoggs to £134.50, several sheep trading £125-£132.
A good show of Farming hoggs these very good to cash throughout and taking a big lift on the week, numerous bunches £120-£124.50, with the well bred hoggs all £115-£124, a large bunch of 81 Texel x hoggs to £120.50. The next step down from £108-£114 with purchasers extremely keen to purchase all shapes and sizes.
Medium keep hoggs trading £95-£106, with plenty £100 plus, only the smaller and plainer types sub £100. Well bred longer term hoggs all trading £84 to £92, the smaller and harder bred hoggs from £72-£80. Very small all £55 plus.
Just under 500 Ram Hoggs these to £142, several £115-£130, farming hoggs all £105-£115, Welsh Ram hoggs to £127, others to £122 a bunch of 58 Cheviots to £116, smaller Ram hoggs from £75 to £95 with the Ram hoggs averaging £102.

Overall Average- £107.35
Called by stores were the dearest ever seen by far.!! Plenty of bidders some must be pushing on 330/340 pence live weight. Mostly small now we will stick with ours plenty of grass it's growing/freshening earlier this year, however plenty of winter left yet

Sent some smaller R grade heifers to ABP. The very last of the '22 crop at £5.02/kg. Heard today of a man buying some heifers privately off farm at £3.40/kg. Interesting stats on the MQ report as well saying that 65,000 sucklers went from ROI and 75,000 from the UK in 2023. Not sure that me putting an extra 25 heifers to the bull will quite make up the shortfall.....😂
