Fertilizing winter cereal

Not even got the Polysulphate on. They say it needs two months to break down. So it’s turning into a waste of time and money. I’ve urea to put on by end of March. Starting to wonder if it will ever happen. It’ll no doubt go Saturday. Always at the weekend when a social event booked. I am growing to detest this job actually. It’s a waste of money and effort. I’d happily put it all in with herbal leys, worth £30k a year and let my brother the sheep man make what he can of it. Arable is finished here. It was always a struggle but this year is the final straw.

Went to pick up my son from BB college yesterday, out run by York/ Pocklington, home via Driff/ Malton, lots of sad looking crops, most yet to see a fert spreader, only on the edge of the wolds did things look more or less ok.
Very very few osr crops, and most of those looked unhappy. Osr is heading for extinction in north/east yorkshire.

@DrWazzock I'm going to miss you trials and tribulations when you go all in with SFI👍
Managed to get all heathland done last week, but haven't dare venture on the lowland and the wheats, whats left are starting to go off badly now,but they've looked dire all winter so nothing has changed there.
I was hoping to go today but its blowing a gale now.
Even my winter beans which were drilled at the start of Feb in reasonable conditions on the lowland have rotted off in areas now....this bloody year🤯🤮🤬
Hoping to go tomorrow now looking at the forecast.

I am tempted to go with base fertilisers this morning despite the wind, especially on grass. There’s just too much of a backlog piling up and I’m running out of time.

In SFI news we are only going for herbal leys as the sheep can use them. No point in pollinator mix or bird seed for us as we think they’d get too weedy and can’t be grazed.
How much arable we retain as cereals is debatable. We will need some barley and straw for the sheep so we will grow a bit.
Beans and OSR are definelty gone.

The problem is they are becoming increasingly obsolete as more tractors have air brakes, which these do not fit around. I have some big 1050s off an old combine which I thought would be just the job but the rims are too small.
They look useful tyres though and rims are surprisingly reasonable to have made 🤔

I’m putting on 120 kg ammonium nitrate on grass, winter barley and the tiny bit of OSR that’s left. It is a bit gusty but it’s settling and my thinking is a low ish dose won’t be so bad if the wind blows it about and the faster acting nitrate will save the crop till the urea gets in and going later. It’s not the way round intended it but it’s some progress. The urea is stuck behind the nitrate in the heap as well and I don’t want to move it twice. Biggest dilemma in the field is knowing when to shut off particularly in the OSR. Probably just throwing more money away.
