You will never out exercise a bad diet
70% of food in shops is ultra processed crap full of sugar, sugar is the problem
We have been trained to have sugar as a reward unfortunately
It’s actually quite hard to live a normal life and eat a good diet, there is just so much crap everywhere, stop for a snack at the garage, what choice is there? Everything has been loaded with sugar
I have noticed recently I can’t buy clothes anymore, they are all so baggy around the belly
Very true. Sugar is added to pretty much every processed food or in larger amounts than it used to be. An interesting book on the topic is “salt sugar fat”. It’s focused on the American food processing industry but it applies anywhere really. Details how formulations are fine tuned to deliver the best experience using cheap ingredients that are not filling but are addictive and give good feelings.

Interestingly with the rise in factory processed foods the amount getting back to the farmer has reduced (a lot) while processing companies have flourished.

There really isn’t anything at a gas station that is going to be good for a person if they eat it frequently.

For myself and several others on the farm we have inadvertently become intermittent fasters without trying. It just fits the dairy farm schedule better to eat dinner then eat nothing till mid day. Dinner is sometimes optional too. Reduces the snacks and I don’t think about food all the time.

Most school if not all schools strongly focus on physical excercise ans good diet. When was the last time you interacted with a school? Not having a go but your judgement is often based on your life in circles you don’t mix . Our school , all children run around the field before school
Starts.
Daughters a teacher and sport comes low on the corriculm agenda and its not competative, as no one can be seen to loose
Her husband is a whizz programer, small and thin, little exercise, but hes remained the same since his teens, alot is in the genes

You get fat slowly, a few extra calories every day and you gradually put the extra weight on over months and years, but unfortunately it also comes off as slowly as you put it on so you need to play the long game if your planning on changing your size.

I couldn’t say how to improve childhood and young adult obesity. It’s a large issue. Diet and lifestyle are obviously the two biggest factors but not easy to change in a person, habits already set.

I do actively discriminate against overweight job applicants. Not that they won’t be hired, but it’s significant to consider. They just can’t physically keep up with us for several months if they make it that long and most will not. It’s a lot of effort to train someone as it is, significantly altering one’s physical body while training them is less likely to happen. The ones that do really thrive, had one guy drop 80lbs and kept it off. Many others regularly lose 20-40 lbs after starting here.
What do you do!?

I suspect a good portion of overweight 18 year olds have been that way because they were poorly nourished as children and so in reality their parents are to blame.

Not that I can hold my head up high in any way- neither of our kids seem to eat anything. This only reinforces my belief that children grow by absorbing cosmic rays from the sun as they sleep and by occasionally snacking on the life-force they can actively absorb when in close proximity to their parents. I actually believe children can replicate this with any other adult they are in contact with. They are not dissimilar from bubonic plague in this regard- easily acquired, rather difficult to eradicate.
Poorly nourished for FFS they were grossly over nourished and until society recognises that instead of blaming all and sundry we will never gets over this problem!

We try and encourage our kids to keep active, youngest is easy she’ll go to any kind of activity. Already does dancing, gymnastics, after school PE Club and swimming. Eldest is a bit more difficult and has to be dragged away from the Xbox but goes swimming and will do the after school PE when it’s on.
I felt like a hypocrite though trying to get him to do fitness activities and been over weight and unfit myself! I made the decision to lead by example so started going to boxing fitness classes (both kids will also come and join in). I cut out the excess crap and pretty much stopped drinking and I’ve dropped over 3 stone in 20 months and I’ve never felt better.
Only the other day I carried the youngest up stairs (she’s just over 3 stone) and I thought to myself, fek me I was carrying this all the time not that long ago! You don’t realise how much effort it takes to carry that extra weight when you’re doing it all the time.

Keep sheep and lamb them on your own,
I put the weight on over the year, and loose it all over lambing, and feel so much better for it, its only a stone but it changes you life

the biggest issue today is the total lack of exercise so much crap is talked about low this low that. The truth is sugar consumption has dropped off a cliff it is less than half when I was a kid 60 years ago.
sugar is an appetite suppressant and possibly it would be a big help if we ate more , except it is not good for teeth.
one major issue is that appetite is promoted by eating or drinking anything sweet , the problem is that after this dose of zero calory s**t there is no sugar hit to tell the body enough is enough , so you keep chomping through that Mcdonalds/ KFC / hot dog/ or any other unhealthy possibly low, salt/sugar organic /vegan ultra processed s***e from a mega factory

That's extreme dieting, used to do the same myself either through lambing or shearing. You can't expect townies to go through that level of exercise, they'd need to run around the park for hours and hours to come close.

I don't think Covid helped people in that age group, telling people to stay locked away for long periods of time can only be bad, but hey the experts know what they are doing.
Nutrition is a big one and largely down to the parents plus is there anything for kids to do these days that involves physical activity? What are the schools doing?
Are there lots of after school sports clubs with parent helpers, are there places for them to go etc.
Yes loads of after school clubs here.

I have quite a few youngsters help me at various times of year. Vet students, 15 year old work experience kids, ag college students, the odd NEET from the county council.

Most are ok, some are very good, some are muppets. However the thread that runs between nearly all the youngsters that are hard going is that they are overweight. The heavy ones can’t keep up, can’t do the work, need to sit down and are generally a liability. If you can’t muck out 5 lambing pens without needing a rest you have a problem. Or if you can’t keep up as we walk a flock of sheep a mile down the road. These are both incidents I’ve had in the past month.

In some ways I feel sorry for them, if you’re 5 stone overweight by the age of 18 and don’t have many academic qualifications I’d say you’re virtually unemployable.

How does society sort out the physical shape of today’s youth? Do we put so much emphasis on classroom education that children don’t do enough exercise? Realistically sport at school should be daily and compulsory. Healthy body, healthy mind. Or is it time for a form of national service?

Fitter people would benefit all sectors of the economy- especially farming!

Bring back conscription and give them an army diet for three years
