Doesn't make it alright

Words are not necessary to be racist or discriminatory. And actions can be very subtle and more effective. When is it going to become illegal to have racist thoughts?

I don't really understand people who get upset about some comment on social media, written by someone they don't know and have never met. Just block them or ignore them if it bothers you, though I do admit to enjoying the occasional bit of verbal sparing!

Now, what was that balding ginger git saying about people of colour?
To control speech is controlling one's ability to think, so some are already making attempts at controlling thought.
Hamza Useless for one.

I totally agree with it being odd to allow text on a screen from an anonymous and potentially non existent character to upset you.

Some folks just look for something to upset them, which usually means that their life is pretty comfortable.

66k members. Safe to assume that many hundreds will be lesbian/gay.
We know, for sure, that Muslims are members. Important posts made about keeping abattoirs going.
Yet there is a constant dribble of homophobic and racist posts.
Often presented as humour, or thinly disguised as political comment.
The vast majority of posters on here will choose to ignore it, because it doesn't offend them.
It's the worst excuse in the world, and it doesn't make it alright.
Something I was quite hot on when I was a moderator - it's against the forum rules and also more importantly against common decency

I largely now let it go by without comment (or reporting) because you often get the predictable and often twisted washback. It's not a great advert and definitely re-enforces the misguided view that farming isn't welcoming or inclusive

Personally I find the liberal approach to forum policing is useful. Just like in real life, if someone says something that I think is off or objectionable it lodges in the mind as ‘take that person less seriously in future’.
Free speech is brilliant- say what you like think then it informs other people’s opinion of you.
Likewise, if someone posts something you find offensive, there’s nothing wrong with politely disagreeing with it.

The last thing any forum like this needs is a lengthy set of rules that gets enforced. Inevitably you end up having to take sides and end up embroiled in controversy

The most frequent and most venomous posts on here used to be (and presumably still are but I can't say for certain due to having the offenders on ignore) the anti-British ones, and which were always accepted with a remarkable degree of tolerance and inaction given that they were (and again presumably still are) aimed at the vast majority of forum users.

By internet standards this is a remarkably well-mannered and tolerant place and a credit to most of the regular posters.

Just for clarification, can we still have a go at "Ex public school boys?" After all, "We all know about them"

No you bloody well can’t (as an ex PSB and mod on here - although I have no idea why)

interestingly, I recently watched the latest Jimmy Carr release on Netflix and whilst he was happy to have a go at just about anything, he refused to tell anti Muslim jokes - “I’m not that **** stupid”

TBF to the vast majority of TFF, I would say that you are pretty good at self moderating but @delilah has raised an issue which is worthy of debate and I am happy to leave it in Agricultural Matters PROVIDED you boys & girls keep it civil please

Yep and if isn't civil, it should remain in ag topic but be moderated

There comes the challenge - time , nuance, sense of fair play to all

In other matters I've had occasion to report posts that break rule 1 very clearly but then received a PM asking what the issue was - go figure ......

I'm one as well, but ever since a member WHO USED TO TALK IN CAPITALS said that we should all be shot, I have been in the closet.
And no, I don't know any cabinet ministers, my mates are all perfectly normal members of society and I was never propositioned by the history teacher behind the boat shed. The only Earl I ever met is my landlord. In fact it was a hoot but it seems to have become a sort of general slur after the actions of our politicians and in interviews, former pupils feed the common perception by apologising and pretending they suffered in some way.

Just for clarity … it was a very minor public school for thickos but it did introduce girls when I was 16 so that was the end of schooling for me

Same here, they decided that it was a good idea to test the water with girls by letting in 4 per year to see how they got on with 100 randy schoolboys. Whenever I brought up the subject with an ex young lady pupil and asked how she liked it, she just used to look dreamy and say "Just fine..."

To tie it to a separate discussion: I am incredulous that so many on here are so ready to take offence on behalf of a chap who welcomes criticism and is quite capable of looking after himself, yet take no offence at 'casual' racism and homophobia. It's not a good look for the industry.
Fascinating how a thread about a greenwashing business (dodgy ethics runs deep in its highly crowdfunded, beery veins, imv) turned into something very different. Why would anyone steer a topic away from admonition of a dodgy business?

What if we really don't take 'offence' at any of it because we are grown up and happy to live in a pluralistic democracy of which freedom of thought and expression are a fundamental aspect?

I've no qualms in stating that I think religion absurd, always misguided and potentially - sometimes actually - a very dangerous thing; nor that I find homosexual acts revolting. But so what? That's what I think and I've every right to think it and express it, just as both of these groups can think and act differently and are free to condemn me as they wish. Some of them - hopefully all, but I really doubt that - will be as prepared to defend my rights as I am to defend theirs, and good on them for it.

The only well-known advocate for 'gay rights' that I've come across in person is Peter Tatchell; I disagree with him on loads of things, but we found common cause in the campaign to see Robert Mugabe publicly shamed. Peter has remarkable moral and physical courage and I admire him very greatly for that, but him kissing another bloke would still turn my stomach, because it does.

Please offer a working definition of 'formal' racism and homophobia; and, while you're at it, let us know if a homosexual hating Islam for its literal death sentence on him and every single other one of his fellow homosexuals is 'islamophobic' and - by your measure - makes him a nasty racist, or merely a rational human being. Thanks in advance... (y)
