When can a vet, not our vet, come on our land without permission?

Just had an odd one and hopefully someone can shed light on our rights. I have a 150 ewes about three miles away that keeps getting cast. They are with the tups and will be moved onto brassicas next week when the tups come out. However the landowner has just called to say a vet who lives about...

    Weedwiper clogging up!

I got a new weedwiper from Logic to tow with the quad this season. I used it with MCPA (pasture master) a few weeks ago no problem. Put some roundup through it to do rushes and some thistlex. Now I am back on MCPA the chem seems to 'curdle' in the tank and block up the filters and nozzles within...

Wool Sacks. Have I missed out?

All I ever remember is wool sacks arriving unannounced on me doorstep each year. But this year nothing. Have I missed something? Or was the van hijacked on the way!? Maybe other farmers are driving up the value of wool by stopping me putting mine in! If I have to fetch empty sacks then I will...

Ifor Williams Wheels x 4. Split Rim of old DP120

For Sale. 4 x wheels of an old DP120. Nothing wrong with the wheels. The tyres are old and not in good condition but still hold air. I thought these might be useful to someone as I understand the tyres are no longer manufactured and someone might need a spare or two. £50 for the lot. Either...

    Batteries for leccy fencing sheep

I need to get new batteries sorted now all the sheep are behind three lines of electric fencing. These are the batteries I have at present. What size are they? I don't understand these things. And is there a better option?

    MF 362 Fuel Tank

I had a leaky tank on my MF 362 so had someone weld it up for me in the summer as I was right busy. Might as well of thrown my money in the hedge as its leaking again now. So when I asked I was told no new tanks are available. Does anyone know of any firm selling a new tank? Or anyone pulling...

    Shearing ewe lambs

Anyone tried shearing ewe lambs pre tupping? Just think it might help them eat a bit more and give them a boost. The full fleece on hogs feeding lambs look to me to be a struggle so it might avoid this also. But. Will it affect them in ways I have not considered? Or am I overcomplicating things...

    Blind Ewe

I have got my shearlings on some PP that I was given that is in some well paid scheme or other and today I noticed one that is obviously blind or nearly blind. With the others, head slightly down, freaks out when I get near but runs like she thinks she is going to trip up. I haven't caught them...

Help! Adlib 'shepherdess' feeder advice needed

For the last few years I have got rid of all my pet lambs to one buyer and not had to bother. This year they are not doing any so I have all the lambs here and decided to buy a shepherdess. But the lambs don't seem to want to know it at all. I have got 6 all less than a week old and I have got...

Glucose 40% solution - any alternatives

I have always used glucose injection into the belly of passed out lambs to save them and used glucose 40% solution mixed with boiling water. This year I'm being told it has been withdrawn by the manufacturers. Is there an alternative product? I know in the past some suppliers have grumbled that...

Ewe with stomach on the floor - advice sought

I have an old mule ewe due to lamb any day, scanned with twins, today her stomach is on the floor as she stands looking very unhappy. Happened very suddenly I think, certainly not like that yesterday. Has something ruptured or dropped? Is there anything I can do? Whats her chances? Or should I...

    Dog Fleas

Cannot seem to get clear of fleas this summer. Changed the straw in the sheds. Pouring on flea spray that I got from the vets last year and they seem to be enjoying it. Any ideas? Does any of the sheep pour ons work? Or maybe diesel, that seems to stop most things.

    Sheep lameness question

I have done a lot of work over the last 3 years clearing out lameness in my flock which has done wonders. Anything lame is treated and culled without exception. Main flock seem fine. But I have a small group of yearlings that were put to the tup as lambs but didn't take so I have kept them to...

What is wrong with this ewes mouth?

Sorry about the quality of the photography but can anyone tell me what I have got here? It is like a growth on the bottom jaw inside the mouth of a two year old. I first noticed it about a month ago as a red raw lump and since then it looks to have dried up quite a bit. It doesn't seem to stop...

    Polytunnel Advice

A couple of questions for those with polytunnel experience. How much condensation do you get? If you store hay and straw in one is there any problems with condensation? Does it make a difference what type of cover you get? If you have one with the netting along the sides does that make a...

    Weed Wiper advice

I know it doesn't feel much like it but the grass and weeds are going to start growing soon, I hope. I'm thinking of getting a tractor towed weed wiper for use on the marshes. What are peoples view on the makes available and how useful have they found them. How effective are they on rushes? and...

    Rolled Barley for sheep

Neighbour says I can have some rolled barley off him if I want it, he has plenty for his cattle. If I wanted to feed to twin bearing ewes what do I need to add to it? Should I get him to mix it in his wagon? How long will it keep once mixed? What should I be paying per tonne for the barley? Is...

How much grass do stock eat a day?

Had a conversation earlier about how much a cow or sheep eats in a day when on grass only. We have had a few cold days and nights and where there looked to be loads of grass now you can see where the sheep have been and so we are starting to think about how long it will last. My neighbour...

    Enzovax and Toxovax

Got the vet next week for a six monthly look over the gate. We had enzootic abortion last lambing so think we are going to be discussing that and getting getting Enzovax and may as well do Toxovax while we on the job. Can I give both at the same time? Anyone had any problems with either in the...

    Sheep footbath advice

I've had a recurring problem with scald this year. Following advice on here I have decided to get set for foot bathing so I can get in front of the problem (spray just hasn't done it this year). I have ordered a couple of 18gal baths, so I can run them together or separate. What are the options...
