Shearing ewe lambs

Anyone tried shearing ewe lambs pre tupping? Just think it might help them eat a bit more and give them a boost. The full fleece on hogs feeding lambs look to me to be a struggle so it might avoid this also. But. Will it affect them in ways I have not considered? Or am I overcomplicating things for no gain?

Sheared ours for 15-20 years now, helps them grow on and takes wool away from the udder for lambs next year. If you time it right from early on with clik/clikzin applications it saves an application and the cost isn’t very dissimilar, next year I might shear all stores aswell. Pneumonia would be the main issue with shearing them, I do mine late July/early August and this year had 18mm the next day and I was lucky not to lose any - I wouldn’t want to be shearing ewe lambs into September mind unless the weather promises good for at least 5-10 days after.

We have to do the mules we buy then because that’s when the sale is...

No trials have proven any growth benefits to shearing lambs on staight splits from the same flock and farm. Really just do it here to keep them tidy and clean and dont have that big heavy hogg fleece to contend with next summer i will be doing mine in the next few weeks once harvests over . Have done them into october some years with no ill effects but i have been lucky not to have any stinking days a few weeks after shearing.

I used to so it when I tupped them, I would do it if I could, the only downside is selling the rejects as I take them out throughout the winter.
