3 crops / CAP reform

Depends what they are going to class as a "crop". Are winter barley and spring barley different crops? Are they going to class cereals as one crop type? What about fallow? 2yr grass? The clue was in the question - I will wait until the "plans" are made concrete.

Yes the devil will be in the detail. I'd like to think Winter and Spring crops would be considered different, but I guess it would be the drilling date and not variety that determined whether a crops was deemed Winter or Spring. After all its for environmental reasons we have this 3 crops proposal.

Does a cover crop count?!
Thats a good question if it was put in say early august then sprayed out in March it would be in the ground as long as spring barley so could be a goer, then a bit between rape and first wheat, sorted, but of course we will be dealing with the idiots who run these schemes and wont be able to grasp the idea. The computer says no:(

I cant see a cover crop counting, and I would have a feeling that computer would say no to catch crops etc. Also, if you put a crop of a westerwolds grass in after rape, then DD'd some maize in the following May after a cut of grass, then went into winter barley, would they count that as three crops?

Could be worse - could count all winter and spring cereals as "cereals" then what would happen? I would consider a rotation of WB->WW->WOats a rotation. Depends on their goals. Are they going to want to see three crop minimum rotation on some or all land? Would 25ac of spring beans here and there do?

It's a potential f'up in the making. Easier would be to take £10 off everyone's SFP, and let everyone claim £15 for being able to prove having a decent rotation. Those on hardcore WW->WOSR rotations wont miss the tenner, and that allows the others to take more than their £10 back. I will happily police it for Defra for a mere £1/ac cost plus a mileage allowence.

I haven't heard much from the latest "leak" about the minumum number of crops. I expect it will be left up to member states to decide.

Perhaps I'm being naive here but even Natural England know the difference between winter barley & spring barley. Compulsory overwintered stubbles or cover crop if autumn ploughed for spring cropping as part of "greening" then?

How many farmers have a bit of grass as well as their wheat/osr only rotations or continuous wheat? Are there many of these rotations about now? Oh, hang on. I used to grow 1st wheat/2nd wheat/winter osr on heavy clay. Now growing wheat/sp barley/w barley/osr plus the odd catch crop of stubble turnips for the cows, along with grass & ELS.

I agree with all the above comments regarding detail, idiots & potential f*** ups!

NE cant tell their arse from their elbow.

WW->OSR or WW->2WW->OSR is the predominant rotation around these parts once you get down from the cliff and onto the clart.
