Summary
Note: this early report is based on data provided for just four UK regions the South West, South East, East Midlands and Eastern regions. Any early harvest progress for other regions to this point will be captured in next week’s report.
Early July saw some heavy thundery rain, however the start of oilseed rape and winter barley harvest in mid-July coincided with a period of hot, dry weather affecting much of the south and east of England. Harvest began in the south and east of England between 13-19 July. Good weather and rapidly ripening and drying crops has enabled good early progress with harvest, with an estimated 35% of the winter barley area and 15% of the winter oilseed rape area harvested to date (as at WE 26 July). Winter barley harvest progress is most advanced in the South West (97% of the regional winter barley area harvested to date) and Eastern region (60% harvested to date), whilst oilseed rape harvest is most advanced in the Eastern region (10% of winter oilseed rape area harvested to date). Yield reports from the earliest harvested crops in the south and east of the UK suggest that yields for winter barley and winter oilseed rape are lower than recent years, with most farmers reporting yields below the farm average. Typical farm yields to date have ranged from 6.0-6.6 t/ha for winter barley and 2.9-3.4 t/ha for winter oilseed rape.
