As someone who suffered from IBS type symptoms for nearly 20 years, and now has a pretty solid digestion, I would suggest anyone who suffers from IBS investigate a thing called Candida Gut Infestation. Basically candida is a yeast thats naturally in our guts, along with lots of bacteria, and in normal conditions they all keep each other in check. However if you either knock out the bacteria (by taking a heavy course antibiotics for example ) and/or overdo the amount of sweet stuff and carbohydrate you eat, then the yeast can become the dominant factor in your gut. It feeds on sugars, and in doing so produces immense amounts of gas, and also secretes digestive byproducts which are acidic, which cause the gut wall muscles to tense and contract, giving terrible stomach cramps at times, and a feeling that your guts are 'alive' at others. It can make you constipated one minute and have diarrhoea the next. I had all these symptoms for years, and could never work out what was causing it - I tried eliminating different foods but could never seem to hit any one thing that caused the problems, until I eliminated all carbs from my diet and the symptoms disappeared. I lived on that diet for while, which was a bit dull, but infinitely better than having IBS. I then happened to read about Candida, which seemed to tick all the boxes for my former symptoms. I did a bit more research and read that although there are drugs one can take to control candida, one could also treat it with oil of oregano, which is the natural oil extracted from the oregano plant. Its a natural bactericide and fungicide. You don't need much, its powerful stuff. I took a few drops per day for about 2 weeks. After a week or so I passed what can only be described as a green sludge, which I take was the fungal body of the yeast infestation, that had been killed off. It then took about 2-3 months for my guts to improve, as the good bacteria levels got back to a normal level. I now have no IBS symptoms at all. I can now eat carbs again, with no great problems, occasionally I over do them (I do have sweet tooth) and the IBS symptoms start to reappear, and a few days of drops of oregano oil settles things down again. I have to remind myself how bad things were back then (its been 8 years since I first heard about candida), because its easy to forget how all consuming bad guts can be, and what a negative effect they have on ones life. I just offer this as my experience - I can't pretend to have any great medical knowledge, I just know what I've read, and done, and how things have improved for me out of all recognition. Do your own research and make your own decisions, but please give it some thought, its certainly transformed my life.
