Bale Drying

Well this is one of the daftest threads on a renewable forum I've come across. "We store bales outside and they get wet," well Does a bear sh!t in the Woods !

There is a really technical solution available that is re-usable and sustainable and requires little energy, it's called a stack sheet !!

Alternatively you could go very high tech, and wrap em..........................

Like your point, tough love advice!! ;)

I bought a breathable stack sheet a few years ago to cover round bale hay as I was not wanting to wrap much fodder that year. Worked wonderfully well as no sweaty bales under the sheet at all. The stack is on recycled crushed 25mm concrete so drains quite well and the bales on the bottom stay in good condition too. Need a fresh load of stone to build it up a bit this time after 4-5 years.

Spoke to a chap once who was trying to develop a type of shear cutter that would chop off say, the top foot of wet straw, leaving the remaining bit dry and useable...

Don't know if he ever succeeded but I've never seen anything like it...

Ive often considered if a decent chainsaw may be used for this but never tried it ..

I know a few people who have used a flail mower / hedgecutter on the bad bit. Only works on one face of the bales though (the one without strings).
