Best sheep breed

Are some sheep more suitable for spending the winter indoors? I need a sheep to go on all this grass we have now, but they are going to have to come in for 4 months of the year.

I'll be unpopular with this suggestion, but Zwartbles may fit the bill. Funky colours, great temperament, and mine are hardy, having lived out in a very exposed part of the Forest of Dean all winter alongside my OH's Welsh Mules (with ad lib hay but no extra feeding), and they still look great :D

Why, is it too wet?:scratchhead:

Yup. More the damage to the soil. My crystal ball is suggesting that the return to mixed farming is going to happen sooner rather than later. We need something akin to a glorified lawnmower to go on these grass leys after silage that is going to keep the grass (and blackgrass) nibbled tight to the ground until it gets too wet and cold to do much else, which is going to be into November.

Trouble with being in Lincolnshire is that everyone expects you to have Lincoln Red cattle and these slightly mad dreadlocked longwool sheep. An alternative plan would be to just go to market and buy a load around now, and send them all back to market in winter. But in short, I have shed space and silage aftermaths that really need using, rather than spending time and diesel topping 50ac of grass. I'd rather see it go into an animal.

Talking to Mrs Static and she thinks we should get some longwools but I think she is barmy.

@yellowbelly dont u have some of these?
We surely do - hence the avatar. We only have about 25 ewes,it's more of a nostalgia thing really. I've been involved with them since I was a kid - the farmer next door was one of the 3 breeders who stopped them dying out, like the Curly Coat pig in the 60's and 70's. I would hate to see them go the same way so for our sins we keep a few.

I wouldn't want to put her off but Lincolns are about as far at the other end of the spectrum to Easy-Care as you can get. :banghead: They are also big sheep, see:-

So if you are worried about poaching your ground I'd go for something a lot smaller and lower maintenance.
You can always come and see us at Heckington Show/Sale I'm sure we could rig you up with a couple of Lincolns to keep Mrs Static happy;)(y)
