Here’s my problem I’ve broken a Allen bit and the broken part is stuck in the grub screw, any ideas how to get it out as it is a snug fit, it’s as hard as glass so won’t drill.
Thanks
Ronnie
The trouble is half the hex bit is still in there and I can't get it out and I am looking for ideas of how to remove it, its a good fit so won't just drop out.
Its quite a small grub screw about 4 mm and that makes it difficult to get the broken bit out, once that's done ill heat the area round the screw and get it out, keep the ideas coming guys just to get the idea of the size its the grub screw for the nut that holds the draft spring in a Massey 135.
Thanks .
Can you get to the back of it and give it a good whack with a hammer
my brother snapped the ball end off a Allen key in a screw and I managed to drill it out with a good old fashioned sharp bit
Can you batter it with a pin punch to break up the bit that's stuck in there, maybe heat it cherry red and quench it to make it really hard and brittle, if that doesn't work then heat it again and then turn the heat down slowly to try and soften it then try a good drill - like a Dormer E-HSS or pure carbide.
I would think that heating and battering it will make the grubscrew loose anyway.
Place a washer over the top, weld it as hard as you can, if you wanted you could then try a nut on it too, might manage to get the grub screw moving if you heat it enough.
Thank's guys I got the nut the allen / grub screw was holding but not the grub screw itself so the urgency is over because I now have more options.
Thanks for all the help.
