Changing values?

Not quite sure where to put this but I was listening to an interview with someone from (I think) the Abbey National Building Society about mortgages and property values on R4 this morning. He mentioned that the property market is changing and I believe he is absolutely right. And it will not just be property values that are changing.

For the most part, people do not like change but when they are forced to change they become aware of new possibilities and better solutions. This pandemic has forced people who have previously been 9to5ers to work from home. They have discovered that it is not just acceptable but encouraged. Their homes are no longer just somewhere to spend nights and weekends that need to be within x miles of the office but places to live and enjoy 24/7. That is going to put home ownership in a completely different category. Why live in the city if you don't want to when you can own a country property with a pony paddock and nice views?

Yesterday, it took me 12 hours to upload a 15 minute video. My upload speed is 0.70Mb/s. So I have been battling with my internet providers and that is all I am going to get for the immediate future. But I am told I could have 40Mb/s quite soon if I paid (through the nose) for it. So faster speeds are coming and prices will come down. Working from home will be the norm for many people in the future, if it isn't already. Distance which has been measured by the time it takes to get into the office will in the future be measured by the speed of communication. Some are doing this already, but I suspect it could really take off post C-19 and a lot of values are going to change dramatically.

And yes, Covid is changing the way we look at work - there will be a lot more people working from home after this is over.

Thanks for that. I contracted for fibre, then found I was getting the same speed, so told them I wanted to cancel and go back to standard. But I am trying to set up a new web page which will involve videos and the upload speed is driving me to suicide! The stupid part is, they've recently put fibre cables past my road end but apparently BT have a monopoly, hence the price of "super fibre" at 40MB/s! I could not get online at all for over an hour this morning.

Edited to say I've just looked at that map! There is a bloody great dent in the side of the area they cover. One guess where I am located! Sometimes I think they do it deliberately!

Can you get line of sight to someone who is already a customer? They can transmit quite decent distances if free from obstruction, and that is the basis of my mate getting a signal - from memory he picks it from one, and onwards sends it too.

Definitely get a call in to one of the techs at Cromarty Firth Wireless, and also Monsternet and Scotnet.

Sadly. I think there's an obsruction in the way but I will certainly look into it. Someone technically savvy posted on a Facebook group and that is another one I need to follow up.
