4 cyl 880, 950 and 1200 could all be done without splitting, Personally never did a 780 so can't tell on that one, it all depended if the muff coupling could be moved far enough one way.
Even then it was many times easier to split them if you had the equipment, because otherwise it could mean removing gear box top,steering box, control panel and in some cases draining and removing fuel tank, with the obvious consequence of dropping muck or bolts,nuts, spanners or sockets in to the gearbox.
