Detachable Towbar on Discovery 4

Official Land Rover detachable tow bars are made by Brink we have one fitted to our Discovery Sport (fed up with the wife borrowing my truck for the horse box) have had the tri-axle Ifor Williams on the back of it, not sure if I'll do it again after reading this thread

I'm sure Landrover will have done something about it. My husband had his replaced by a town bar dealer and they put a fixed bar from another brand.

We bought a Disco 3 and the detachable U shaped bit was missing.

After the horror stories, there was no way I was going to pull 2 horses with a detachable tow bar. The genuine LR part is 9 million quid and there are lots of cheap copies on ebay made of Chinese monkey-metal that look identical.

I bought a fixed Witter towbar on ebay from a dealer, which was £150 brand new. Bit of hassle fitting it, but has been brilliant.

Same here on our Sport, often towed 3.5t in 14' IW box on the detachable, no one ever said it was not capable of utilising the vehicles max towing capacity.

As above it has now been replaced by an excellent fixed tow bar at Cambrian LandRover

Dodgy tow bar on the Disco so someone suggests buying a Defender, on account of it 'being safer'?

You must be off your rocker. The Defender is probably one of the most dangerous cars on the road. I am sure a Land Rover expert will be able to point out the crumple zones on the chassis and the parts of the dash and steering column which are designed to deform to protect the occupants...

I'm on my 4th Disco and never have I opted for the removable tow bar. Always the height adjustable fixed one with the support bars.
If you're towing an Erde trailer from Halfords with a 150kg payload you'll be fine, but a loaded Ifor, horse box or similar is madness to think that u bend attachment is up to the job. Besides that, if you tow trailers with different hitch heights, you can't adjust the ball height. IMO they should never be offered as an option. The fixed ones also work well as a parking sensor ;)
