Ewe prolapse

That's what the vet said, I know you can overdose with mag but he said calcium is fine, never had any trouble myself, I was think more 80kg ewe, so 1.5ml/kg. Interesting what you say about not culling out prolapse ewes, I generally just get rid of the ewe but may think twice now, I will give her ewe lamb a chance tho.
we have always culled prolapsing ewes but would prefer to give her offspring a chance as never thought about it being heredetary?

Too much of anything can be bad though...

Don't hold me to that if you get repeat offenders prolapsing :bag:
But my observations come from a year I had a bad run, and stitched in quite a few. I lost track of all that I did and plenty were kept... I had next to no prolapses the next year. I did catch and lamb a ewe which I noticed had stitch wounds (if i remember right, the lamb just had a leg back). Since then, Ive just kept them all

Don't worry I won't hold you to it ;). Lots of people say they'll keep doing it so they cull them all, raising the question how do they actually know or is everyone working from the same shared wisdom?! Have often wondered how many would actually re-offend so I found your observation very interesting

Harness, antibiotics and metacam. Spoons went on the fire a couple of decades ago as they cause irritation more often than not IME. If I ever used up all 5 of my ancient harnesses, I'd rather fabricate another from bale string than use a spoon.

I always cull the animal (life's too short), but not the offspring.

I'm pretty sure I've heard it said that you can with an overdose (n)

120ml is a bloody big dose! It would really depend on the size of ewe you have... for instance a downed Blackie only needs 60-70ml to get her back on her feet... the 'rule' is usually 1ml per kg of bodyweight.

Is @CornishRanger using a different strength of Calcium Boroglutanate?

I use 60ml of Calciject 5, which is twice the concentration of Calciject 6. Dose of the latter would need to be 120ml to give the same amount of Ca.

Hmmmm good point, maybe?
When you talk of calciject and sheep, I only ever think of the Blue Top, I don't consider any of the others.

That's the Calciject 6 (20%). I have always used the Calciject 5 (40%), which has a red top, as it's what we always had in stock for cows. It's about the same price per 400ml, so twice the calcium for your money.;)

I've just noticed that Calciject 5 only has cattle on the data sheet these days though (I'm sure it used to have sheep), so I may be in trouble with the resident vets now.:nailbiting:

Sorry, aye you're right.

Red top doesn't have Mag or Glucose, though - not as good for a downer ewe, IMO.
We have it for the cows, too...

Blue top administration guidelines is 50-80ml per ewe.

Red top still has about 5% Mag, so not as much as the blue top one. Rarely have any need for mag in sheep here though.
